Classic 30 heating up normal?

I have a basic question... i know tube amps get hot but last night i was jamming at a drummers house with my Peavey Classic 30 and i was surprised at how hot the metal chassy at the back of the amp got.... the metal back that says Classic 30 on it.... i had the pre amp on full but the Post only on 3 maybe 4 at the loudest and we had been jamming for 2 hours.... you could almost burn your hand.... is this normall heat for these amps... I imagine the tubes do heat that area up pretty good..... Makes me wonder what that does to the insides of the amp...

First time last night i used a Boss DS2 Turbo Distortion for juicing the amps OD channel for solos... i turned the Turbo off and just used it regluar for adding more dirt for the solos.... It worked pretty good! Without the Turbo on it just sounds as good as a DS1 to my ears.... not a very good pedal with the Turbo on... without it it is as nice as any of my DS1's..

Mine gets hot on the back, I think it's normal. Probably want to keep it out away from a wall.

ya it was away from the wall.... it was in the center of the room. I bet my C50 head must get hot inside!!!!! thank god it has a fan..... But it did surprise me how hot the C30 combo amp got... I had my 65 Deluxe get very hot.. tech said some part inside was not working and allowing higher voltages to the tubes... i burnt out new tubes real quick!!!!

Re: Classic 30 heating up normal?

I've had my C30 since last august and I'm using the stock tubes. I play it just about every day. It will get hot. I left it on for a few hours by accident but it is still ok.

Re: Classic 30 heating up normal?

Most EL84 amps run hot. But, it shouldn't be enough to burn your finger on the chassis.

Next jam i get to turn it up a bit again i'll double and triple check the heat factor... if it is heating up again i'll take it to a tech to check out..... i have other amps i need to take him anyways

you don't see many Classic 15's around.... i only ever seen 2 of them and both were at the old Peavey Warehouse that was in Toronto..... It's closed down now.... Wish i had bought them... they were returned and repaired items and i could of snagged them for dirt cheap....

i still think peavey's classic line was their best.

Re: Classic 30 heating up normal?

I got a Peavey Classic myself... 50 watts hybrid amp from 1976. I just need to put it together, the previous owner was a total idiot who pulled all of the components out of the board, and f'ed up the power supply, just because he wanted to see "how it worked" :(

Re: Classic 30 heating up normal?

I had a Mesa DC-3 with 4 EL84's, and it never got that hot. Granted, it cost three times as much as your Peavey, but your story is still somewhat alarming.

The C50 has a fan. Mine moves out enough heat to drasticly warm the room up, but the amp it's self never gets hot enough to burn you.

Re: Classic 30 heating up normal?

Hmmm, when i play mine on post -6 pre - 12 it gets hot enough to hurt your hand if u leave it on the back for a few seconds. But no burns after it or anything. Your tubes should be lasting at least 6 months to with the classic 30s. If its so hot u cant touch the back for more then half a second something probably aint right.

Re: Classic 30 heating up normal?

You could put a fan behind the amp for those extra long/loud sessions to help cool it off a little.

Re: Classic 30 heating up normal?

My Orange AD30 is an EL84 amp and I've never noticed it getting that hot.

My Marshall JTM60 combo gets very hot during use. Infact, the metal corner protectors for the handle ontop of the amp get very hot aswell as the grille on the back.
