classic 30 mods?

I love the cleans i get, but what should i do if i want to fatten up the dist. channel and get more breakup... it has ehx 12ax7's and jj el84's and the stock blue marvel speaker.

I've never done any sort of amp modifying before so if its easy and cheap that would be nice

Re: classic 30 mods?

And just about the most difficult amp to work on. The board is a 4 piece design folded into a box with connections between boards that don't tolerate manipulation very well.

You can't really get much more gain out of these amps without serious bandwidth reduction.

I'd suggest that if you don't want to boost it with a pedal, sell it and get something that suites you better.

Re: classic 30 mods?

ok, well how about a speaker that breaks up easier?? thats more the idea of what i was getting at in the first place

Re: classic 30 mods?

I've tried a Classic 30 with Celestion Vintage 30 speakers. I sounded better than the stock speaker...

Re: classic 30 mods?

there's a mod i've been trying to add gain, fatness and tone on smallish tube amps. It's fairly non-intrusive and all the parts you need for it can be found at most decent guitar stores.

worked so well on my 68 Bassman that i had to try it on a Marshall Class 5...works like a charm. Would be totally surprised if it didn't work for your Peavey.

Here it is:
First take one of these:

Run it from your guitar's jack to the right-hand side of one of these:

Then use another one of these:

to connect it to your amp.

The best part about it? No soldering required, and it's totally reversible.

Best mod I've ever done

Re: classic 30 mods?

I've tried a Classic 30 with Celestion Vintage 30 speakers. I sounded better than the stock speaker...

Exactly what I did in my old 1x12 combo. I agree it sounded better. Plus the Vintage 30 is less sensitive, so you have to turn the amp up more which gives you more breakup.

You could also try some ECC83 tubes in the preamp. That will give you a bit more on the pre knob.

Although I did not like the dirt channel of the Classic 30 with V30s in it. I still prefer the gain channel of my brother's stock Classic 30 with the blue marvel speakers in it. But the clean tone of the V30 loaded amp was really amazing!

Re: classic 30 mods?

Depends what you are looking for. If you want metal gain, a pedal is the only way to get there. However, with my C30, I ordered a full set of JJs and told Bob I wanted more dirt, and I put in a Private Jack speaker. I can now very easily get classic rock/southern rock sounds.. the biggest thing I didng like about the stock speaker, is when Id hit a big low power chord, it would almost seem like it would Thud when I hit it and then the tone would ring, (almost like it overloaded the speaker) now there is instant response.

Re: classic 30 mods?

It doesn't have anything to do with tone, but I would like to strip off the fake tweed contact paper and put some real lacquered tweed fabric on the cabinet. That contact paper really looks cheap on an American made amp. I'd rather have a black tolex one if they even make them.

My Fender has real lacquered tweed fabric covering and it is a lot nicer and more durable.

My Delta Blues rips with a full set of JJ's and when I plug my new Line 6 HD500 into it, it sounds great by any means reasonable.

A high quality overdrive pedal or multipedal might help a lot. That is a very good amp to begin with, contact paper or not. Crank that amp and it will roar.

Re: classic 30 mods?

before you do anything drastic....have you tried a tubescreamer?

I have an ocd, played a maxxon 808 through it and didnt like it, i have played a dirty bomb through it alot and though the level of distortion is cool i think the sound just isnt that great from it

Re: classic 30 mods?

okay so if you have tried them and still want more crunch, then a speaker swap would be The next step. Try somnething like a G12T75 for more fatness in the bottom, and it also knocks off some tops so you can crank the gain a bit more and it wont sound brittle. I reckon one of them and your ocd and you will have a pretty good drive tone. The g12t75 works great in open cabs like yours and even creates the illusion of a closed back tone because of its fat bass.
I have not personally tried one .... but i belive the eminence private jack is a similar speaker to the G12T75.

Re: classic 30 mods?

I used to have a Classic 50 212, so I guess that's close enough.

I agree with swapping the speaker, to a V30. I also used mine through a Marshall 4x12, along with the amps internal speakers, if I remember correctly. When I played my Strats, I used an SD-1, with the gain turned down, and the level cranked. Fatted it up nicely.

Most of all, turn that sucker up as LOUD as you can. The louder these things are, the better they sound. Even with the stock speakers, IMHO. Many years ago, I also had a Classic 20, that I used to take to jams. I had to crank it all the way up, but it sounded awesome!

If that's still not enough gain for you, then you may just need to get a different amp. These weren't made for modern metal tones. These amps were originally meant to compete with the Fender Bassman reissue, with a bit of a Vox flavoring, due to the EL84 power amp. Just obviously with with more gain, to satisfy more modern players(for that time, in the early '90s.)

True! They arent high gain, they do sound better cranked up and sound VERY cool going thru a good 2x12 or 4x12.

When I need more gain with mine, I add a TS or my Raptor pedal and it gets the job done

classic 30 mods?

I had a Private Jack, and all JJ's. It was a huge improvement over the stock amp. Another thing I did that was very effective was to insert a Boss EQ-20 in the loop. With a little EQ tweaking and a slight boost from it I could get it pretty thick and heavy. That being said, it's not a particularly ballsy amp so the potential is somewhat limited.

Re: classic 30 mods?

GOOD NEWS: I JUST CRACKED ONE OF THE EL84s!!!!!

So, that gives me a decision to make, anything i can do with the tubes since i have to get new ones anyways
