Clean Boost Suggestions

Re: Clean Boost Suggestions

I use an old DOD FX10 on my pedalboard. It has a tone knob, but set flat it doesn't change the tone. There's also the BBE Boosta Grande, another "in=out just louder" pedal. I like the Soul Food, but it's not what I think of when I hear "clean" boost.

Re: Clean Boost Suggestions

Wampler db+ is a nice full frequency boost with plenty on tap, and is true bypass along with a nice buffer option.. klon clones would also be good if you want available mid boost and dirt, works great just using the volume knob and functions as a nice buffer.. my favs are by ARC and RYRA

Re: Clean Boost Suggestions

VFE focus is a clean level boost if you apply no filtering and keep the level near or just above unity volume, but it can also do the mid-boost by applying the filtering and giving it more level,,,,,and then of course anything in-between.
It has no clipping diode so it doesn't get as much of the automatic silky smooth compressed mids as an 808.

I just remembered another clean boost I used for a while that I liked. The Henretta. It has level and EQ switches inside so you can make it flat EQ if you want. It's tiny and great if you want something specific but set and forget.

Re: Clean Boost Suggestions

For a great clean boost, I'd check out the Pickup Booster, which has more than enough clean boost for any application. I found that the resonance switches help boost an already overdriven signal much the same way a classic TS-style boost smooths things out.

Re: Clean Boost Suggestions

Ok.... I ran home at lunch to try boosting the Quickrod with a few different pedals. Unfortunately, I couldn't get my hands on the Katana, it's not where I thought it was.

I setup a pretty hot sound, 2nd Gear, Gain just under noon, treble and midrange up, bass back and presence barely on. I used a C5 loaded Floyd equipped super Strat (sorry I don't have a SD or JB right now)

I tried:
-EP Booster
-Wampler Clarksdale
-JRad Archer Ikon
-Timmy

All were setup with level above unity to boost, gain just under a quarter if applicable, treble ranging from 10 o'clock to 2 o'clock to get a tone I'd think is good. The Splawn is already a modded Marshall style amp, so for me a boost is good for altering the attack, overall EQ and feel. Not too much of an increase as far as saturation and volume are concerned. Also, all of them gave me the "boosted Marshall" sound and feel, with different EQ and attack. That extra compression that makes it feel easier to play, more liquid sustain and an extra punch.

From darkest to brightest:

EP Booster: Rolled off treble and increased lower mids. Super chunky on palm mutes and a really "full" tone. I had to be careful with the bass on the amp. To my ears it added "bass".

Wampler Clarksdale: (modded Tube Screamer) Even with the mids dialed back, I got a very "parked wah" style thing going on. Lots of thick mids that I'd like for soloing but would get old for rhythm. I think I had the midrange pretty high on the amp so the tube screamer's natural mids kind of kick it over the top. To my ears it added "Midrange".

Archer Ikon: (Klon style) Nice Boost. It was darker than I was expecting so I added some treble. It really pushed the treble frequencies forward, almost into the presence range. Nice cut and attack on palm mutes and chords. Single notes cut through. To my ears (the way I had it set) it added "treble".

Timmy: This uses the "backward" style tone controls where turning them up removes treble or bass. I reduced the bass a little to tighten up the attack a bit and kept the treble at full for the most "sparkle". I think this is what you are looking for. It still had the boosted Marshall sound and feel, but more high end zing than the others. To my ears it added "presence".

I bet an RC Boost or Timmy would work for you.

Again it was quick and dirty, I could have setup the amp to works well with any of the pedals depending on what I was going for.

Good shootout! I'd be curious to hear what you think of the Katana if you found it.
Dave Locher offer me his at a fair price sonim gonna grab that and see where it takes me.
I'm still curious about the spark booster too...at $50 it hard to pass up.

And you're right...the added compression really makes the QR shine, doesn't it?

Re: Clean Boost Suggestions

I have never owned a mini Spark but I played one quite a bit in a shop and it is a really good boost, too. I think the Katana is a bit more neutral where the Spark really bulks up the lows and low mids, but since I never A/B'd them I can't say for sure.
I have been through a LOT of boost pedals over the past year or so and the Katana was the one I liked the best. The OD mode has sag and bloom, even running into a pretty clean amp!
I hope you like it. If not, just keep on flippin'

I know where it is, just need to start the basement excavation. ;) I don't know why I boxed it up, I guess I've been using the EP a lot lately.

Do you have any pics of your Quickrod? I'd love to see it.

Re: Clean Boost Suggestions

I think you want the TCE Spark Booster. It's an incredible pedal and I can't see it disappointing anyone. It does exactly what it's supposed to do and it sound real and clear.

Re: Clean Boost Suggestions

If the pedal footprint isn't a deal breaker the Keeley Time Machine Boost is a killer pedal, plenty of sparkle and presence plus another stomp switch to fatten things up with a warp drive boost. If it's a good solid lead boost then either a Micro Amp or CAE Line Driver has worked well for me in the loop of my amps.

Nice!

Here's mine:

Love it dude...:I'd hate to have to try and keep it clean though...lol

Ha! We both have the nitro head shell.
I went back and forth between that and the Supersport shell. At some point I still might order a SS shell from Scott.

Even though I'm going to buy Dave's Katana I think I'm gonna pop for the spark booster too...it is REALLY good.

Yeah, that's a killer Paul!

Thanks!

At the time there wasn't even a nitro. It was just a different shell. I got mine used in plain black/clear headshell and needed a cab so I ordered the headshell as well in a matching theme. Now I kind of wished I went straight Plexi style but oh well...

Nah...the Plexi style is overdone...,I'm all about doing something different.
