Clean practice amp...

What would you guys suggest I try out if I'm in need of a low-powered (bedroom/dormroom levels) amp with good cleans? I'm also on a budget of $250.

Re: Clean practice amp...

The new Hughes & Kettner "Edition Blue" series is great. I tried the smallest one and the biggest one, and they were both fantastic. I think they've really nailed it for the smaller bedroom amp. The cleans are great.

Re: Clean practice amp...

The Valvetronix and Roland Cube stuff is cool, because not only do you have those cleans you have so many other sounds. Check out a Cube 30.

Re: Clean practice amp...

I would go for a Tech 21 Trademark 10. PERFECT for beautiful cleans (and distortion tones if you're interested) at bedroom/dormroom-friendly levels. Check out the glowing reviews at Harmony-Central.

Re: Clean practice amp...

dude you have to get a fender blues jr! i got one a while back and it kicks ass clean, and with an overdrive pedal sounds amazing! its a 15 or 20 watts all tube, you can crank it and get that sweet spot at awesome volumes!

Re: Clean practice amp...

I have a pro junior right now, which I prefer to the blues jr. They are just too loud. Keep the SS/hybrid/modelling suggestions coming!

Hi-
I would go for wither the Tech 21 TM10 or the Vox AD15. I had the tech 21 but sold it since it only had one channel. I now have the Vox and it's great for bedroom/low volume playing, plus you can store 2 patches along with a manual giving three patches.

The clean channel and the clean-ish "Fender" models on the Roland Cube 30 are very nice.

+1000

I snagged the Edition Blu 60 on a hot tip from Frank, and couldn't be happier. Absolutely killer cleans, due partially to a genuine Celestion 12" speaker. The "Made in Vietnam" sticker is interesting too. :D

Darn, almost enough to buy a Fender Blues Junior :D

If you have effects processor(s) with amp modelling, get a small keyboard amp. There are good smaller guitar amps for non-amp-modelling stuff, but I don't like modelling amps, and I don't like amp modelling either. That's the reason I said the Fender Blues Junior: the sound impressed me recently when I was playing with amps at Leitz Music.

Re: Clean practice amp...

I have a Cube 60 and it does the clean practice to small jams nicely. Amazing amount of sound for such a small amp -- sounds twice as big as it is. Try the Dyna amp channel with the gain all the way down for a thicker clean sound.

Re: Clean practice amp...

Cubes RULE!!!!!
You get:
Choice of Micro/15/30 watt models - depending on what you call "dorm"
Headphone jack on all of them
Roland Jazz/Chorus on all of them - a great clean amp model!
Fender Blackface, Vox, Bassman models on the 30 (maybe 15)
Effects built in! Chorus/Flange/Phase plus Delay/Reverb
Small!

What's not to like...30's loud enough for jams if you want.

Side note: I see a lot of these "quiet for the dorm" posts. I always found it was important to have about 10x more watts than the jerk who just has to turn it up when you want to study. If you need to go to war - and you will - be prepaired for total sonic annihilation. Marshall Mode4 half stack with a power brake for "dorm levels" would be my real suggestion!

Re: Clean practice amp...

Definitly a Vox DA5/AD15/AD30, any Roland Cube or a POD. The blues junior/pro jr. is going to be too loud/big.

Re: Clean practice amp...

I just traded my H/K Edition blue 30 w/reverb for a blues jr. I really liked the amp for cleans-which is what you want. It was very lightweight and did the trick. Two channels that sound great at lower volumes-plenty for dorm room. The cleand channel was nice, but the gain channel got sort of farty once it's cranked, so I never used it.

I've heard so much about the little Blues Jr. and I got a great deal on trade for it. So far, I like the Blues Jr. a little better. I think the cleans are a bit more authentic and natural sounding.

Re: Clean practice amp...

I wouldn't recommend a Roland Cube 60. It sounds great, but you will have to put it a tiny bit louder than what you might want to get good tones... The Cube 60 starts delivering it's goods at mid-high volumes, and royally sucks at low low volumes.

I say, if you consider a Cube amp, try the Roland Cube 30. :)
