Cleaning gold hardware

I may have asked this before, but I have ADD so give me a break.

How do you clean gold hardware without taking the gold finish off?

I know, buy solid gold hardware. But in the absence of that possibility...

I hate gold hardware because it only ever looks good for the first....few weeks?

When I worked at the store I would often use cymbal cleaning product for it.

Don't. At least not if the hardware came from FMIC. Ruined the bridge of a Gretsch following the advice of an FMIC support person on the phone.

Also, check your warranty - gold is never covered ...for a reason.

Wipe it after every time you play with a microfiber cloth. Once it is tarnished, I don't know if there is any way to clean it. To be fair, I've never seen gold hardware that doesn't tarnish.

When the gold wears off, it's called relic'd hardware and it's magically worth more than it cost all shiny and new. Sell it, buy new hardware and get yourself a 6 pack with the profit. Rinse and repeat. :bigok:

Whatever you do, do NOT use the silver cleaning method of reactive deoxydized aluminium added to a hot water bath... it'll strip it instantly.
