Probably because they're the closest to the Bassman circuit, being one of Marshall's first designs. The amps moved farther away from this basis as they evolved.

Alvin Lee Fan said:I'm using a set of Valve Arts KT66s in it right now. It came with extra tubes, so I've got a set of Russion and Groove Tube KT66s as well. I love the 66s, don't even want to try any other tube style in there.
For pres I have a set of EH12AX7s. It came with a set of JJ ECC83s and it sounded ok, but a bit raspier. The EHs smoothed it right out, I love 'em!
