I'm looking a getting a superfatboy 2x12 made by Zilla cabs and the closed back option is slightly cheaper than the open back option
I played progressive metal and a lot of cleans
What are the tonal differences between closed back vs open back?

From my ears alone, the closed back keeps the bottom end beefy and prominent. Which is whay you'll be needing for prog metal amd cleans

The Mesa Thiele is about as beefy as a 112 will get. The older ones also have the evm12l speaker,,,which are better for it IMO.
212 or 412 and I'm on the closed-back wagon with most other rock/metal guys.

Re: Closed back vs open back

You want a closed back cabinet for heavy music, period.
Nobody I know of uses open back cabinets in a "Progressive Metal" context.

Re: Closed back vs open back

I prefer closed back. That being said, I have an open back 2x12 combo with a Swamp Thang and a 12M-70. If I dial it in right, it will do metal. Progressive, thrash, melodic, death metal.

Re: Closed back vs open back

Open back has more apparent bass, but it's flabby and less detailed. Closed back is tighter, cleaner, punchier and more detailed but lacks a bit of bass. This is often made up for by larger cabinet size and particular woods used in the cabinet construction.

The layman explanation for why open back has more apparent bass but is flabbier is due to the lack of back pressure on the speaker that would cause it to settle back to the 0 point quicker. In closed back, there is a fixed amount of air behind the speaker and that puts back pressure against the cone causing it to settle quicker, which gives better detail but doesn't allow such full bass sound, which would require more free/full travel of the cone to reproduce. That's my layman understanding from reading books by studio designers. Someone who designs speakers and cabinets could give a better and more accurate physics explanation. But for me, just knowing 'open = more flabby bass', 'closed = tight but lean bass' is enough information.

Re: Closed back vs open back

Thanks for the feedback.
I'll go for a vertical super fatboy with v30 and k100 in a closed back format
