well, a couple things i'd like to point out
in small rooms, open backs are actually louder, don't know the science behind that, but they are
open back cabs, like stated before, fill a room much more, like the sound is coming from more than one place, but you do lose bass, and standing infront of the cab isn't all that intense
a closed 4x12 with really efficient speakers WILL take your head off if you're right infront of it, and for hard rock, metal, whatever, it's pretty much the standard
but for a really full & well distributed sound, assuming you don't mic up your stuff, you'll either want 2 cabs at opposite ends of the room, or another guitarist
2 guitarists, running 100 watt heads into 4x12's with v30's or something that efficient is really, really intense, and therefore, it rules

just seems to me that it's alot crunchier and has more presence with the matched close backed cab..of course that's a 4x12 and I'll be using a 2x12..
I would love a 4x12..but, they're too big and a pain in the ass to trasnport...and I don't want it taking up my whole room =) I almost threw my back out on several occassions transporting mesa cabs up and down two flights of stairs in my mother's house...
I'm going to try closing off my extension cab for now..if that suits me, great...I do see myself getting rid of it and going for the matched b-52 2x12 with the vintage 30's in it though..
