So I'm new here and have had a couple...Richard just bought a Boogie and were all happy for him!!! Now, fess up-what was your first tube amp? I'll spill the beans and say that, having owned the sweetest old school Randall 120 watt S/S head...I plugged into a Bedrock 1600 combo that my local-going out of business-music store originally had listed at close to a grand..I got it for 300.00!!! a fuse and a tweak later (65.00) it was rollin'.

God-I wish I could find another!:smack:

Re: C'mon..yor first tube amp?

My first was a Matamp head that must have been made in the 60s. Can't remember the model but I remember what it looked like. I bought it from a friend in about '76, having played through it for a couple of years previously. Sold it in '77 to buy my second tube amp which was a Marshall JTM45, also from the 60s. If only I'd known then how much those amps would be worth now!

Early 70's (?) Ampeg V4 with 7027a powertubes......still got it as a matter of fact! Hasn't been powered up in at least ten years. Someone added a master volume at some point. Pretty cool amp.....weighs an F'n ton!

Re: C'mon..yor first tube amp?

mine was a 69 SF Vibrolux Reverb, bought it in 78, paid $100 for it. I still have it. Considering all the amps that have come and gone over those years, it must say something about the amp that I still have it.

Crate VC508, little 5-watt combo with an 8" Celestion, a 12AX7, and an EL84. Mine is the cream-colored NAMM 100th Anniversary variety. It's a fun little amp for the living room, and it plays well with pedals.

SF Deluxe Reverb with ****ty ass speaker.

Re: C'mon..yor first tube amp?

jcm800 2203 half stack. It was great, but when I bought it I did not realize how LOUD it really is! You have to crank that beast to get the tube tone.

+1 on that...I've got a JCM800 clone...50watts...even with the master and extra preamp tube-it still likes to be opened up!

Re: C'mon..yor first tube amp?

My first was a Bogen PA amp, a CHB35 on top of a homemade 2-12 cabinet. There's a hilarious story about this amp at a battle of the bands posted somewhere back in the dark recesses of the forum. Search for a good laugh.

The next one after that was a 70's silverface Twin Reverb, as transitional model with a master voilume but no pull-boost.

Interestly enough, the donor chassis on which I built my current 18 Watter clone was a Bogen CHB20A - little brother to that first amp from so long ago.

Fender 75. One of the odd two channel designs they put out in the late 70's/early 80's. People seem to love'em or hate'em. I played a bunch of gigs through it for ten years.

Re: C'mon..yor first tube amp?

Gibson GA5, pretty cool for Jimmy Page sounds, not enough headroom for my needs though and not enough sustain - so I sold it and replaced it with my Princeton Reverb clone....

Peavey ValveKing Vk112. Great cleans, but no use for the distortion. Sold it off a month or so ago.

Re: C'mon..yor first tube amp?

Fender Pro Junior had it since 2004 ..... still my only amp (although my frenzal should be here in under a month!)
