C'mon..yor first tube amp?

Re: C'mon..yor first tube amp?

B-52 AT-100. HORRIBLE POS! Everyone loved them though, and I bought it because people were raving about how it can mimic Mesa, Marshall, Peavey, etc. Sounded decent at the store, but when I brought it to practice it squealed and fed back like crazy! And no it could not hang with my other guitarists Marshalls or anyone else who dropped by at our space with a quality amp like a 5150 or KranK. Even at full power it got drowned out like a SS Crate or something. The fx loop died on it and later the amp itself died. After I got it repaired it ate power tubes about every 2 months so I sold it and bought a Peavey XXX and later sold that to a friend and bought a 6505+ that I have been happy with for the last 3 or 4 years. I love the 6505+ and am sticking with it.

First tube amp--1993--Peavey Classic 50 2x12. Not bad really! I had some real interesting solid state Crates before that though...

Re: C'mon..yor first tube amp?

My first hybrid was a Fender Performer 650.

But the first real tube amp was/is my current one, a Marshal TSL601. So far I'm loving it!

The next one? Maybe a Tiny Terror?

First? Only.

I played my Dad's SF Twin Reverb for awhile.

Re: C'mon..yor first tube amp?

My first tube amp was a Peavey XXX and it was a POS. Terrible, dirty clean, muddy and cloudy rhythm channel. The only thing decent was the Lead channel.

Going to a Marshall JVM after has been paradise. Tweaking and swapping tubes with that has been a joy and allowed me to get what I wanted for the thrash sort of tone that I have. The versatility from each channel is amazing too. I can go from thrash to classic rock/blues to sparkly crisp cleans.

1966 blackface Super Reverb (AB763)...will never sell it. It had a lot of gigging miles on it when I purchased it 18 years ago for $250! I can't imagine what it would be worth today.

Re: C'mon..yor first tube amp?

Peavey Heritage VTX 212, has a solid state preamp and 4 6l6 tubes in the power section. I got it because they're cheap as hell (I paid $150). Has a good clean sound. The big problem with them is that they're useless for any kind of distortion. You can use a distortion pedal, but it sounds best when you plug a different preamp into that 130W tube power amp.

JCM900 dual reverb, really good amp, much better than my later "upgrade" DSL 50, what a bee-hive that things was.
