Re: C'mon..yor first tube amp?

Mine was a 1977 SF Fender Bassman w/ a 2-15 cab, I bought it off some guy who was stoned out of his mind at the sale, I traded him a solid-state Fender stage 100 amp, a Dunlop fuzzface, and $75, that was back in 97 when I was 19. About a yr after that a buddy of mine sold me his dead father's 1966 all original Fender Super reverb amp for $125, it had set in a storage shed for 15yrs. The only reason I sold that was b/c I needed books for school, to this day that is the only piece of gear I regret selling.

Re: C'mon..yor first tube amp?

Engl Screamer 50 combo, still got it. After some mods (new tubes and speaker swap) it does its job quite good but I know that my next amp will be a Dr Z MAZ 18 jr, or a Shiva :D

Re: C'mon..yor first tube amp?

A borrowed Silvertone. It was total dog ass unless cranked. Then is was mildly loud dog ass. I was however, motivated to hurry up and get my own amp pretty quickly after that. Round 2 was a brand new Peavey Heritage 2x12" combo. :)

Re: C'mon..yor first tube amp?

Epiphone Valve Jr. head and matching 1x12 cabinet

taught me so much about tone and tubes...miss that beast

Re: C'mon..yor first tube amp?

My first was a JCM800 2204. Don't know what year it was. Great sounding amp, but had to return it.

With the exception of my Classic 50/50 power amp and my 1959RR, every tube amp I've bought has been a JCM 800.

Re: C'mon..yor first tube amp?

my first tube amp was my second amp, a 50w jcm 800 half stack.

OUCH!!!!!! It would have been nice to hold on to that super, oh well, life happens.

Re: C'mon..yor first tube amp?

A Roland Bolt 60 combo. I was in high school and worked one summer to save up for it.
It was disappointing.

Re: C'mon..yor first tube amp?

My first was a Kalamazoo Model Two, bought new about 1966. I think I still have it, and one of these days I'll have to re-cap, re-tube and re-speaker it. Maybe a new Mercury tranny too.

My second was a BF Fender Bandmaster and matching 212, bought used for $300 in 1967. That amp was stolen in 1972, and I then bought a SS SUNN Solos II solid state combo that I used for 20+ years. A Fender Super Champ with an EV 10" speaker got me back into using tubes. After some vintage Marshalls and Fenders, I now use one of my five Mesa Boogie amps.

Re: C'mon..yor first tube amp?

65 blonde Tremolux head with 2x12 blonde cab - paid 150 bucks back in 79.

I had one of those! Great amp! I bought mine for $50 and had to put $200 in repairs in it. Mine had the 210 cab, all in smooth Tolex with the BF panel. One of the best amps I have ever owned or played through.

Re: C'mon..yor first tube amp?

My first tube amp was the 3rd amp I'd owned, a 1982 Marshall 50W JCM800 combo, single channel with vertical inputs. If I'd known about attenuators I'd still have it.

Re: C'mon..yor first tube amp?

Okay folks - mine was a Selmer Treble and Bass 50 watt head with a home made 2 x 12 cab. These were British made amps that came a very poor fifth place after Marshall, Hi-Watt, Laney and Orange. You could pick them up in junk shops for about £30 at a time when none of us could afford the better amps. I suppose they might have been a little like Fender Twins - they were very loud but it was just about impossible to overdrive them, they just stayed clean. I used mine with a Coloursound Tonebender which is now a much sought after fuzzbox. I was playing a very crappy Avon Les Paul copy. I would love to be able to revisit this stuff to hear what it sounded like as I really don't remember - I know that I used to struggle to get usable sounds out of it and I was very pleased when I was able to pick up a used HH head which was the first British made solid state amp that did a passable impression of a cranked valve amp. Is there anyone out there that remembers this stuff ? Did Selmer and HH amps ever make it to countries other than the UK ?

Re: C'mon..yor first tube amp?

My first amp with a tube in it was a Marshall Valvestate VS65R. Cool amp, but I don't consider it a "real" tube amp.

Two years later, I replaced it with a Fender Hot Rod Deluxe. They were still made in the USA back then. I really loved the cleans on that amp, but I yearned for a fatter, chunkier overdrive tone.

Re: C'mon..yor first tube amp?

Me too!

Mine was a '93. Yours didn't have the ignition key? Probably the most distortion ever to come from a single piece of kit. And the logo lights up! (doubt it was fiber optic or anything, like the Uberschall channel 1-2 strip lights. Wonder how much noise that Ampeg light added?)

2nd tube amp: '93 Ecstasy 1/2 stack

Mine was an Ampeg/Lee Jackson VL-1002 half-stack that I sold about a year ago:

The guy who bought it was really happy to get it and I was glad to sell it so that I could buy a new Charvel. So it was a win-win situation.

Re: C'mon..yor first tube amp?

Selmer Treble 'n' Bass $150, a plate says somewhere inside "1969":

It was heavily modded. Almost everything was replaced / rewired by someone who knew what he was doing, it has bigger trannies and so on and handwiring looked like a bogged Albert Einstein's brain - it has been running without any hiccup for over a decade now. I put that in some old, battered radio box because the original housing just became "rotten off". Still have that, great for both bass and guitar. Great vintage amp that produces the sweetest power tube OD.

My first tube amp was a Gibson Lark. Probably about 30 watts. It was on the same line as a Fender Champ, maybe a little more power, but no effects. One volume, one tone knob.
