Coffee to age platic? : RESULTS! (Pics)

Re: Coffee to age platic? : RESULTS! (Pics)

Thanks SO much for the tip man!!!
The parts look fantastic- well done.

Thanks man, I like the look.

As for a pickguard, it is hard to say. If you use an original fender pickguard, rough it up just enough, and let is soak in hot coffe, it probably would.

I found that the thing that helped most was keeping the mix in direct afternoon sun. Later that night, I tried another test knob in the same mix, but cold, and after 6 hours, the stain had barely taken. You really need a warm day to get it done.

Well that seems to work better then the cigarettes!!!

Cool trick...

Stored for future use.

Do you think the sun had something to do with it, UV rays?

Or just the heat?

I don't know, UV might of had something to do with it, but the fact that the coffee was warm for the whole process most likely made the biggest difference.

Heat is the key.

I dropped the parts in a cup of hot coffee sitting on the kitchen counter over night.

For sure. I think the reason mine took so little time is because of the constand heat.

There is also something to be said about the concentration of the coffee. You need to make it so dark that you can barely see the white plastic parts under about an inch of coffee.

That's the only kinda coffee I drink!

Comes to two strengths...

Normal and fuel.

Oh, and iced coffee!

Drinking one now... too hot for hot coffee...

hi there, has anyone tried relicing the plastic with shoe polish and wood stain? any success with that? better than the coffee idea?

Blast from the past. I don't even own that guitar anymore. It was cool though.

I did the same thing when I got my current strat. Except I added whiskey and beer. Mostly because I was drinking it at the time, and it seemed like a good idea.

Does the coffee stain wipe off? I can imagine it giving the dark appearance on say the pickguard, but wiping with a finger will rub the stain right off and you're back to bright white. I'd think the same issue would occur with the pickup covers.

I've also made a mixture of coffee, yellow curry, and wood stain, because it really works fast.

One thing I'd warn about is putting pickguards in hot water. Heat warps plastic, so you could easily ruin a pickguard or pickup covers. I'd just use cold water but leave it in there a long time.
