Re: Coil split vs coil tap, do you know what they mean?

So I went and did it - today I ordered a custom made P90 with a coil tap. I can't wait til it gets here and I can try it out.

Tapped P90's are very cool. If the winder finds the sweet spots both in the tap and the full wind, you'll love it.

Re: Coil split vs coil tap, do you know what they mean?

Coil swapping is something completely different, it's Artie's ingenious invention to pair coils from separate HB's.
I'm not familiar with Artie's circuit but PRS has been pairing coils from separate HBs since 1985. Their rotary switching provides for inner coils in series (approximating a middle pickup) and outer coils in either series or parallel.

what arties mod does is make a virtual humbucker though, and always uses a screw coil and a slug coil(provided you're guitar has standard screw/slug coils) creating a virtual humbucker. it's still a humbucker so to speak, just with coils from each different pickup.

I must add, A Vhb is indeed, awsome! very airy- depending on p/u's

Re: Coil split vs coil tap, do you know what they mean?

I just noticed your Avatar, are you in the AquaBats? We met two of the members in Austria back in 1996.

IN the aquabats?? i wish!(i really do, they're supposed to be a 2 guitar band and currently only have one;)). i'm way into them though:D that's pretty cool though. which members? they've got some whacky names:naughty:

Re: Coil split vs coil tap, do you know what they mean?

can some one explain to me the difference in one post, cal me dumb or what ever, i just want to learn.

Re: Coil split vs coil tap, do you know what they mean?

coil split refers to when you're using a humbucker, and you 'split' it in half, and are only using one coil. tap is where there's a break in a coil to 'tap'. as in, say the coil in question has 8000 winds. it has 5000 winds that are always sending a signal, and 3000 'tappable' winds. the tappable winds can be cut from the signal for lower output.

I don't know which members they were. They heard us buying bratwursts at a street vendor and shouted out "woah, Americans!" Then we shouted out "woah, Aquabats!" ;)

Re: Coil split vs coil tap, do you know what they mean?

Coil split is where a humbucker (a pickup with 2 individual coils) has one coil shunted to ground leaving the other coil working.

Coil tap is where a SINGLE COIL has a secondary hot lead "tapped" at a specific point within the wind. A 9k single-coil could have a tap at 6.2k for a nice vintage sound and then full output at 9k.

best explanation yet imo

Ugh!! There ya go, throwing stuff out there that is not even close to correct.

If that coil has 8000 winds, you can tap it anywhere in those 8000 winds. It can be at the 5000 mark, the 3000 mark, the 3500 mark, the 6700 mark. It doesn't matter, that's the choice of the winder.

There's signal through all 8000 winds, all the time. And there's signal in the tap, no matter where it is, all the time. It's just a matter of which one is being routed through the 'tap/full' switch and ultimately to the guitar's output.

Yes, but you need to think about what you're saying rather than just parroting off things you may have read about from someone else. It makes you look like a self-proclaimed know-it-all based off what you read on the internet rather than first hand experience. ;)

Re: Coil split vs coil tap, do you know what they mean?

I've explained this before, and its so simple. A "tap" refers to a type of electrical connection thats somewhere in the middle of a system. (The police might "tap" your phone, for example.)

A "split" is one of the many functions that you can use a "tap" for. So, as someone said earlier, a split is always a tap, but a tap isn't always used for a split.

Peavey, btw, uses a "tap" in its humbuckers to split them. They aren't 4-wire. They just a bring a tap, (1 wire), out to the external wiring.

Congratulations. Glad to hear you are not shocked appalled at yourself.

+1000

I don't think I've ever heard it explained that well and succinctly. Kudos to your intellect.
