Coil split with HSH configuration (Ibanez RG1570 & SD hot rodded set)

Hello everyone. I just got a Hot Rodded set as a replacement for my Ibanez stock pickups. The guitar comes with a HSH configuration but I'm only replacing both humbuckers and leaving the stock single coil in the middle.

The stock humbuckers have 1 red and 1 white wires whereas the SDs have 4 different wire colors. The different wiring scheme is confusing and I'm not exactly sure how to split the humbuckers in order to maintain the default options I have now through the 5 way switch (neck, neck south+middle, middle, bridge north+middle and bridge).

The SD wiring diagram doesn't mention how to split the humbuckers and I've found a couple of old threads but most of the diagram links provided have since stopped working.

Should I solder the red+white wires in the SD to where the white wires in the stock humbuckers were soldered? This seems like the correct way to do it but I need a second opinion.

This is the original Ibanez 1570 wiring diagram.

Let me know if I haven't explained myself correctly. Any help would be appreciated :)

I don't think that's the original wiring diagram. It has an extra switch in it, not to mention having "mod" in the file name.

If you wish to combine the middle pickup with the screw coil of the neck pickup and the slug coil of the bridge pickup you're going to need to flip a magnet in one of the pickups as well as change the wiring from the stock Duncan diagram if you want hum-cancelling in both positions 2 and 4.

Here's the duncan chart for hsh auto split

And here's how you figure out the lugs on your Ibanez switch

Thanks. That's basically what I thought I had to do as described in the first post (red+white wires soldered to where the white wire was in the stock pickups). My only concern is if this way I get humbucking in positions 2 and 4 or not.

Thanks for the heads up, I edited it to the right one now. I'm not following what you said though. I'm pretty sure in the stock wiring I'm using the slug coils both in the neck and bridge humbucker when I'm in position 2 and 4 (or as I tried to describe: neck south coil + middle or bridge north coil + middle).

Do I not get humbucking if I wire as Clint suggested?

The South coil is the screw coil, which is the coil I'd use when splitting the neck pickup, especially in a 24-fret guitar, FWIW.

Alright. I don't feel comfortable opening up the pickup to be honest. I don't understand how I get more wires in the SD's but have to resort to that in order to leave everything working as it came stock though. I thought it'd be easier to make the swap TBH.

If I wire as in the first diagram would I just use the full humbucker + middle coil in positions 2 and 4? Because if that works I'm willing to lose the split coil options for now in order to leave the guitar working again.

Re: Coil split with HSH configuration (Ibanez RG1570 & SD hot rodded set)

Auto split to slug coils is easy. Follow the diagram Clint 55 provided, connecting the red/white wire pairs to the half of the switch where the ground wire is connected between them.

Hopefully the middle pickup is South, otherwise you're going to get hum or have a phasing problem.

I will try it out and let you know the results.

Would a SD middle pickup solve that problem if that were the case though? Would I have to order it RWRP?

You would want a standard single, not an RW/RP.

I wouldn't buy a pickup to solve a hum or phasing problem when you can solve it by flipping a magnet and reversing the wires (to fix hum), or just reversing the wires (to fix out of phase with hum), or just flipping the magnet (to fix out of phase with no hum). I'm not saying you will have a problem, rather what to watch out for and how to fix it if you do have a problem.

So I finished installing them and everything seems to work as intended! I definitely don't get any noise in positions 2 and 4. I don't think they are out of phase either, but what's the easiest way to tell? I've never experienced that.

Re: Coil split with HSH configuration (Ibanez RG1570 & SD hot rodded set)

Out of phase will sound completely hollow, like a fly buzzing in a jar with most of the air sucked out. There will be no body to speak of, really only mostly highs. It's worth trying just to experience it. Some guys even like it.

But since you find that it sounds normal and there is no hum then you're good to go.

I'll normally just make sure the middle pickup repels the slug coil when putting them face to face before installing to make sure the magnetic polarity is correct. I should have mentioned it earlier.

That's a neat trick. Thanks for all the help nonetheless.

Re: Coil split with HSH configuration (Ibanez RG1570 & SD hot rodded set)

Repel? Sigh. I meant attract. One needs to be North and one needs to be South for in phase and hum cancelling. They will attract when placed face to face.

I can't seem to get out of my own way these days!

Thanks. Clint deserves credit too.

This forum is full of guys who know their sh*t and I'm a pretty small fish. I've learned a lot here.
