Cold Heat Soldering Iron

Has anyone seen the ads for this battery operated soldering iron called "Cold Heat". Supposedly, it heats up to 800 degrees instantly, then cools to the touch just as fast. Sounds too good to be true. Actually, I'm not sure what a regular soldering iron heats up to. If this thing is for real, it will be the best thing going. No plugs, just batteries.

If anyone has experience with it, let us know. I think it goes for $19.95 (of course. Everything on TV sells for $19.95 :laugh2: ).

I bought one,tryed it,and returned it...You have to push down on the tip in order to get the joint heated up...It felt very awkward to a guy that uses soldering irons "ALOT"....You don't have the floaty,free feeling of soldering with this thing like you do with a regular soldering iron..

I have one. It's a good tool to keep in a Gig bag or for emergency repairs. But as John said, for someone who uses a soldering Iron a lot, it will just slow you down.
It is also difficult to get it in the cavity of a guitar.
What the add asys is true..... It heats up very fast and cools down very fast, but if you press hard it tends to burn the tip out quickly and the tips cost about half the price of the iron itself. I will keep mine just in case!!!, but my Weber is my go to Iron!

Seems like a gimmick, but I really don't know. I'll stick with my Weller.

I've got one. I find it's good for working in my guitar's control cavity. It doesn't melt the surrounding wire's insulation because it has little or no radiant heat. The trick is getting used to the split tip. You have to make contact with both prongs to make the arc which is what allows you to solder. It took some practice but I can do it pretty well now. :smoker:

I bought one also, then took it back, not really a good product, good in theory, but not in use.

What Jeffrec said about the 19.95 tag on everthing is so true lol

Actually, I think it's the same thing as what is called an electrode soldering iron. I can't remeber the exact name, but they have been around for a while ... Many model railroad/hobbist catalogues carry them ... I'm not into that stuff, but those catalogues have some cool llttle tools that you won't find anywhere else ... (free tip there guys).

It's interestng technology. Some stovetops are being made this way now, ie. the cool off as soon as you turn the eye off. It sounds like it's a good tool in an emergency, but not going to take the place of the tried and true design. Maybe a later generation cool iron will have the kinks worked out.

In theory, it's a great idea because it gives you much more mobility. I guess they have to perfect it though...by that time, it'll cost more than $19.95 :yell:

Well, for portability just get a butane powered one ... and that takes care of that ... they heat up quick too.
