Colors and guitar types

Do you gravitate towards certain colors or bursts, etc for certain guitar types or do you just say heck with it and are all over the place? For me, I go with certain color types or styles with certain types of guitars or brands of guitars.

Example - I would do bursts on single cut guitars but in most cases not a tele. I would do something wild on a super-strat or pointy guitar but probably not on a single cut guitar. I would do more basic, simple colors on a strat but not on a pointy guitar in most cases.

Anybody else have varying color tastes on different guitar types/brands?

I have a lot of black guitars of all styles

Given the choice I like hot pink and various shades of purple . . . but also red, blue, green, orange, yellow, and natural wood tones. The worst colour for a guitar to me is black . . . but I've seen a few black guitars that are pretty awesome too. So, not too picky? :P

For guitars I like, I'm not overly picky. For any pink though, it would have to be shell pink on a Strat. That color on anything else is just gross, IMO. I wouldn't get neon colors. They're simply not my thing. There's not a lot of solid colors I don't like but whether I would own an instrument with them is a different story.

I love the tobacco (or vintage) sunburst on my Les Paul but I also like black and goldtop on Les Pauls. For SG's, it's white or black. For Strats, I prefer solid colors over bursts. Natural is good one some as well. Just depends on what it is and how it's done.

Butterscotch, certain whites, black, some reds, there's some really cool bursts out there too.

no blues, greens or neon.

That really depends on the guitar. Overall, I would prefer a translucent finish that shows off the wood grain of the guitar. Unless it's an ugly grain. Then it really doesn't matter much.

At first I was thinking "yeah color is super important to me" because it is, but then a mental inventory revealed that all but 1 of my instruments that were bought with a color in mind have not stayed with me. Playability/utility beats color any day. But I dig the heck out of my earth toned axes. And the butterscotch tele...

Anything but bursts, dyes or other wood showing through.

Anything but black (because the typical "only lefty guitar in the entire store" is a cheapass black strat copy with white pickguard).

I gravitate towards any finish that looks like it belongs on a muscle car or speedboat.

I'm all over the place, have a few sunburst, a couple black, several purple, one green-purple flip flop, a few natural... no rhyme or reason to the style or color of any of them.

For the most part, I stay away from common finishes, like burst LPs, blonde Teles, and black pointies. I do tend to like deep saturated colors, like reds and blues.

The only guitar I bought solely based on looks is a Squier HH Bullet Mustang. It's a surf green (I think). I swapped the humbuckers for singles and the white pickguard for a brown tort unit.

For me sunburst LP’s are cool (except a clown burst) as are gold, black and Pelham blue. Tele’s must be black, butterscotch or White (May Kaye too). With Strats strangely I’m not as biased although Mary Kaye and sonic blue are my favourites. My favourite hot rodded Strats would be metallic orange ala the orange Clone guitar posted earlier in the thread and Tyler burnin water finishes. With Suhr and PRS guitars I like translucent finishes over a nice flame but not overly keen on quilted tops although I have seen a couple I wouldn't kick out of bed!

I tend to prefer anything that shows the grain of the wood, but have bought solid color guitars if they sounded good and made the sound I was after.
