Come follow me on an amazing Custom magnet swapping journey (results)

Settle down and hear a tale. I have a Les Paul that came with 498/490s that made it sound like I was using pickups made from rusty cans filled with half-dried dog poo. Changed em out for PGs. Hated the bridge, too brittle. Got a Distortion. Too compressed. Got a custom.

Thought the custom was great, but wanted to see what I could do with it.

Tried a8 roughcast. Too clangy and stiff. Like chewing aluminum foil.
Tried c5. Sounded very good but scooped.
Tried uoa5. Sounded like c5 without the scoop, maybe a bit mushier. Less crunch but it wasn’t bad. Pretty good dynamics and texture.

I was happy with the uoa5 until I got another guitar with a Suhr Aldrich, which pretty much beat my uoa5 custom in every way. Better crunch, thicker highs, nicer cleans. Texture about the same level but hotter.

Put in a polished a8 in the custom. Same as the other a8 before it. Running out of options, I put the ceramic back in.

Awesome crunch. Singing leads with good sounding harmonics. Better cleans than the uoa5 but still ceramicy.

Works great for metal and rock. Works well with the PGn.

The sh-5 custom it shall stay.

YMMV

Forgot to add: I really think the sh-5 just sounds the most like a Les Paul out of all the custom mags I tried. Like with the uoa5 it was not bad - it was good - but it didn’t really sound like your normal Les Paul rock sound. In a blindfold test I would have had a hard time sayibg it was an LP. Now with the sh-5 it’s unmistakable.

In something like a Strat, the Custom Custom (A2) is my favorite choice.

i had a roughcast a5 in a custom for a while in a sg and it was a terrific pup, back then i didnt know how much difference rough vs polished made. the sh5 is a great rock n roll pup for sure

It totally matters what guitar it’s in. The a2 would’ve been too tubby in my LP but in alder it would be great.

Sh5 rocks in an lp. I tried the sh11, wasnt bad as such but not for me.

I'm gonna go play with mine now.

Much has already been written here about Custom magnet swapping.

Ha Ha!

Proof that it's hard to beat a proven formula like the original Custom...Mr. Duncan knew what he was doing!
