Coming around on SNS

I absolutely hated the SNS set in my Kauer Banshee, I couldn't find ways to describe how much I detested the tones. Fast forward to this week and my new PRS S2 singlecut with muddy, fizzy stock import S7 pickups. I didn't have many options laying around, especially with nickel covers, so I gave the SNS a shot.

While still not ideal, the tones are all usable with my usual amp settings. The bridge pickups are nice for the tones with less low end and more gain. I can actually see myself using these for a while now. It just goes to show that wood matters and pickups can sound very different in different guitars.

The Saturday Night Specials are a real pinch hitter in hollow and semi-hollow bodies IMO!

I had a similar experience with Antiquities. They came in my LP Traditional, and I loved them. I got a set of Custom Shop Pearlies for my other LP and decided the double creme bobbins would look good in the Traditional. I put the Antiquities in my Standard and it turns out I don't like them nearly as much in that guitar.

Every piece of wood is different. It's all trial and error.

I don't think I'd stick with them if they're just "usable," though. Life is too short. If I don't like the way a pickup/guitar combination sounds, I move on. The SNS probably work better in SGs or Les Pauls or 335s anyway.

I'm actually pretty picky, so usable isn't as negative as it would be from a lot of other people. Finding something in the right output range that works with my other guitars isn't easy.
