I have a BBQ and think its a little too dark and could use a touch more gain. Wondering about the Crunchbox bridge pup. Anyone try em? Thanks

Yeppers, I'd try the Crunchbox...although I love my Texas/BBQ set & my Tallboy/Muey Grande HB sets, I REALLY love my Punchbox/Crunchbox set exactly for the reasons you mentioned.
The are no PUPs I could really compare it to - kinda like the bastard child of a JB & PRS#7...the PB/CB set has WAY more balls-to-the-wall then either (think Invader without the mud), and has just the right amount of growl, articulation, gain& crunch when I need it...it really blows me away! :saeek:
The only other guitar I favor as much as this one (a USACG/Strat creation) is my FCS 89' HM Strat that has custom wound Anderson H3+ PUP in the bridge and two special SC he did for the Mesa Boogie amp shop to test prototypes...not many PUPs I've heard anywhere that grab me like those do, but for totally different reasons than the PB/CB set :32:
BTW, I just got the neck redone with SS frets...hooboy does that axe smoke now!!!!

Just when I think I am done with pickups I find out I am not. I actually have the tone narowed down now. I did go through alot of pickups and aso had some amp mods done as well as speaker swaps, rewired cabs etc. I am happy with all my choices and am almost happy with pickups. I like the BBQ best so far but it could be a little hotter like the C5 and a little less dark. I just tried every configuration of tone and volume pot values and recorded some clips to analyze to determine what works with my setup. I used a pod though and havent yet tried it on the real amp as it is not at home and I dont have access to the rehearsal space but 2 days a week. My favorite Duncans are the C5 and the TB-6. I think the BBQ is in between but too dark and less gain. I am worried that the Crunchbox is too high gain as the distortion pickup is a tad hot for me but very cool.
Do you find the crunchbox hotter than the Duncan distortion?
Where did you buy yours? Everyone I talked to says they have to special order them from Rio Grande?

I would say it's about as hot as the Distortion, but it cleans-up WAY better!
Roll the volume off to about 7-8 and you're in C5 territory...roll-up to 10 and watch-out! You've got a monster on your hands!! LOL
Think C5/JB/BBQ, but packaged in an invader package...the thing I REALLY love about it is it has sooo much headroom, with that type of output there's usually a LOT of compression, but not with this PUP, it's wide awake and ready to crunch all nite long... :firing:
And it cleans-up better nice like the BBQ, although it does tend to want to crunch when pick attack is increased...did I mention it crunches? LOL

Oh BTW, if you think you've reached the end of your "Quest For Tonal Nirvana", I hope you weren't thinking about blade-pole PUPs...cause I've got the inside-scoop that RIO is working on a NEW PUP design that's gonna probably put the Dimebucker to bed.

Uh oh Loooks like a crunchbox is on the way??????????????? I like the texas alot but find it a little boomy in the lows. Are the punchbox and crunchbox alnico 5 pickups or ceramic? Is the punchbox similar to the texas in gain? I think the texas is a little hot for a neck although I may have purchased the bridge version as it doesnt quite line up with my strings in the neck.

The texas is made for the neck but sounds great. I may keep mine, I may sell it after I get the crunchbox/punchbox set. The BBq is also like what you describe.

Can you use the punchbox neck pickup in the bridge position if the crunchbox is too gainy? I like no less gain of a C5 and no more than a distortion pup if that helps
