compare: AirNorton <-> Jazz/Seth/59 ?

Hi,

first of all: I know - those pups are totally different. Let my explain why I chose that title:

my Epiphone full mahagony LP needs a new neck pup:). The builtin was muddy so I put an DMZ AirNorton in - I had it "laying around" and wanted to get a platform (because I've got no clue how the builtin are supposed to sound). It's rated:

Treble: 5
Mid: 7
Bass 6.5

It is way too bassy and I'm definitely missing "sprakling" highs. In my soundterms I can't use it clean. In conjunction with the JB as bridge pup it sounds ok (but not good) - both standalone are missing something (clean!). The AirNorton also has very few harmonics - even in highgain and I want harmonics:( Distorted the JB is really cool.

I'm currently considering a Jazz, a Seth Lover and a 59. But I can't compare them to the AirNorton - maybe some in this forum has experience with those.

I do mainly "heavy rock" - but the range goes from bluesy neck solos till metallica heaviness.
Not to forget: my amp is a selfbuilt tubeamp but I often use a J-Station in front (the rectifier-setting for highgain).

A friend recommended the jazz (so does seymore), but I'm not too shure if it will hold up the high gain stuff. The 59 might be a bit too bassy. The seth lover ... I haven't that heared much.

I'm also open to other suggestions (FullShred?) - any comments are welcome...

the jazz in a full mahogany LP is the best bet for clarity.
it is sparkling,clean and has the best tracking(articulation) in a neck pup i ever heard

Hey, if you wanna sell that Air Norton give me a PM. I also have a Pearly Gates Bridge or a Gibson 490R I'll trade ya for it.

thx so far...

unfortunately I need the AirNorton for my other guitar - an Ibanez RG[something]...

I tried the parallel setting but that didn't help much. In the Ibanez I put in a singlecoil switch for the AirNorton - that sounded ok clean. but I don't like the overdriven singlecoil sound alone - I want a humbucker.

how's the jazz doing in overdriven/highgain settings? I heared different things there...

Hi,

I'd just like to let you know, that I found a really good combination for my epiphone les Paul:

neck: Häusel Vintage+
bridge: DiMarzio Air Norton

The Vintage+ is a "tuned" PAF clone by a (more or less known) german pup manufacturer. It is normally supposed for bridge but really gives me a bluesy, glassy sound, very PAF style. It sounds excellent in split mode - very strat like, at least with a very nice twang.
It has a PAF-style voice, can sing like angels do and is equally good for clean/overdriven amp settings. The Vintage+ has equal (if not more) harmonics compared to the JB .

The AirNorton has even more, but has to be very close to the strings. That way it also has enough power to team up with Vintage+.
The AirNorton is normally used for neck, but it works also really good in bridge position (as I found out today). In neck it was too bassy, but in bridge it's a real good "mean" mate for the Vintage+.

If anyon has the chance to try out the Vintage+, I would definitely encourage him/her to try it - it's really really great. Don't forget the split mode!
