Comparison of Gibson Models

There was a thread started yesterday about comparing SG to Explorer. I want to expand on that and ask how Les Paul (magagony w/ maple cap), SG, Explorer, and Flying V compare to each other. I mean tone-wise - if they all had the same pickups. Which model has better sustain?

I used to own a Les Paul but have no experience the other models. Currently, I own a Hamer USA Artist Semi Hollowbody w/ Seths. I was planning to get a Les Paul Studio and put in a Custom bridge so it would be my hotter rock guitar but now I am torn between all of these models. I will have to test drive them all eventually to reach a decision but in the meantime I look forward to hearing you guys' opinions.

While the LP isd often touted for this, NONE of them will stustain better than the other... sustain is a product of Wood quality and craftsmanship, and these should all be quite similar considering they´re coming from the same factory.... ;)

Re: Comparison of Gibson Models

If all thopse guitars had the same pickups at the same height away from the strings, the Les Paul will be the loudest, have the most bass and sustain the longest. Some explorer type guitars that I've played have massive sustain as well, but the LP will still be the thickest sounding.

IMO, the SG is the most comfortable to play seated. The flying V may be the most comfortable to play standing up. All of the models have the potential to sound pretty awesome as well, as the past 50 years of rock history can attest to.

Re: Comparison of Gibson Models

I'm not sure how much a difference there will be in sustain, but I think the type and the thickness of the wood would all have an effect on tone and sustain. LP should have more sustain due to the body mass vs. an SG. I'm gassing for an explorer 'cuz I'm looking for something a little heavier on the low end than my SG's. Hopefully, the weight of the explorer will give it the low end grunt that I'm looking for...

Re: Comparison of Gibson Models

The SG's neck pickup will sound very different because it's positioned farther away from the neck/closer to the bridge by about a half inch. That's the reason I don't like SG's.
