Contentment with one guitar?

Re: Contentment with one guitar?

Once you find your voice it is hard to stray from it.
truer words have never been spoken...everytime i buy or play another guitar i just think about what i could be sounding like with Petey!

it's hard to open yourself up to other voices sometimes!

i would like to find another one i really liked though!

Re: Contentment with one guitar?

I HAVE to have more than one guitar to be happy. I need a strat to play using the trem and I need a lespaul type guitar for the tuning stability and the chunk. Maybe I could install a good LSR nut on my main humbucker equipped strat clone and have just one guitar cover all my ground, but what fun would that be?

Re: Contentment with one guitar?

If you'll find that one guitar - stick with it...
I think I need to have at least two or three...

Re: Contentment with one guitar?

i tend to go after one sound no matter what guitar I play, so I could absolutely just use one. i bring just one for the gig, too.

Re: Contentment with one guitar?

In the world of guitarists, you've got your Steve Vais and your Alex Lifesons.... I definitely share more in common with the latter.

Re: Contentment with one guitar?

I'm totally a one-guitar guy. My black strat with a CC in the bridge, Dimarzio noiseless in the middle, Texas Special in the neck. To me, its like I've got 10 different guitars in this one since I'm working that volume knob constantly and I can make it do whatever I need.. And its got Graptech saddles so no string break issues.
I got the white one for the super pure position 2 and 4 tones for a couple songs we do. Depending on my mood I may just use the middle position Dimarzio on the black one instead of changing guitars. Thats all I need.

Re: Contentment with one guitar?

Adam,
Again, I realize a backup guitar is important. My issue is more along the lines of what Robert said..
I have a bunch of great axes. I honestly love them all. I play one and I think if this was the only one, Id be ok.. I play another and think the same thing.
I dont have any one that is the holy grail.. I wish I did, this would be easy.
So, I have to reduce numbers (and I need $$). So. part of the question was should I try to keep the various tones? Consensus seems to be that one guitar can get close enough.. I honestly figured that anyhow with effects and all..
So, I want to be able to cover many things and mainly Im at a crossroads where I want to find my own voice. How do I find contentment with one? Again, I wish I had one that was just magic...

Re: Contentment with one guitar?

funny thing when I played out I had one main guitar (Ibanez proline)and a backup(crap palmer)and I prayed I didnt break a string and have to use it. now I have like 6 guitars, I think 2 is all I ever needed I would keep my Epi goth and one of my SZs I play heavy rock and metal and I dont have the same pups in any guitar

Re: Contentment with one guitar?

I play a G & L Legacy (aka a fender strat american delux) and that's it for my electric. Although I occasionally yearn to have an LP in my arms, the legacy is crazily versatile. I just finished a 3 song demo with my band and the legacy, and if you care to hear it, it should be mixed/mastered/and put on www.myspace.com/feverteammusic in the next few weeks

Contentment with one guitar? Are you kidding? Bwahahahahahaa!!!! :D

If I *had* to be content with one, it wouldn't be by choice, I'll tell ya that right now.

If I *had* to trim the herd a little, I'd be content with my Frankenstrat, my '94 American Standard and my Martin D-28. That means I'd really have to let go of one, and I really love that other one.

My Kramer kinda doesn't count towards the total anymore depending on who you ask (me or my wife) LOL. I say it doesn't because it doesn't go out anymore and is rarely played She'll say it does just to keep me from buying another one. That and she'll never ever ever ever allow me to sell it. Even thinking about it gets a dirty look...LOL.

Not even an option. It's doubtful I could be happy with one electric (I'm assuming we're not counting acoustics, because if I couldn't have at least one electric and one acoustic then whomever this fictional character holding the gun to my heard is about to have the fight of his life).

Two electrics I can do. Once upon a time I used my LP Studio and my Aria Strat... my Ibanez was stripped and unplayable. In a way that was a great time because life was very simple. For me it wasn't about the "Les Paul" sound or the "Strat" sound... it was more of a need to handle two tunings. If I had to trim down to two electrics the first would be my LP Studio and it would take me a long while to pick the second.

I find that in my own playing. So, yes, I could get by well with only one guitar. In fact, that's pretty much how is has been with me my whole playing life.

Re: Contentment with one guitar?

right now Im playing my Explorer.. 59b in the neck, Custom in the bridge. Its pretty close to "perfection".

My Squier strat is most versatile, my Kramer Pacer Imperial has the perfect neck, my Michael kelly patriot custom has a very unique tone, my LP with Alnico II pro neck, Genesis Mr Browney bridge is the warmest sounding.... If I could roll them into one..

Re: Contentment with one guitar?

My style and rig are built around playing a Les Paul - standard wiring, no coils splits etc.

I really enjoy playing my SSS Strat at home and I periodically make attempts to introduce it into my covers band's gigs, but what usually happens on the night is that it stays on the stand and I play the Strat songs on the LP.

I also have perpetual Tele gas, having owned a beauty many years ago. But if I had to choose one guitar to last me forever I'd have to stick with the LP.

I experiment with different pickup sets in my two LPs, but I always favour something in the PAF-style and end up making them sound similar.

I've found my voice, so yes I could easily be content with one Les Paul - I'd just have to remember to change the strings more regularly to avoid having a backup for breakages.

Re: Contentment with one guitar?

I'd also add that, whilst certain guitars are associated with certain styles of music and some guitars are considered more versatile than others, in my experience you can play anything on any guitar if you put your mind to it and select your amp and pedals carefully! (VH-style dive bombs on a hard tail are a bit tricky, but you catch my drift).

Re: Contentment with one guitar?

All I ever play is my C-1, and I get buy just fine.
Although I've had SERIOUS GAS for an alder V with a Floyd...

Re: Contentment with one guitar?

This is the aspect of electric guitar that I really hate. For the most part, I find that guitarists are more interested in aquiring gear than learning to play the guitar. Other musicians don't fret (pun not intended) about having every kind of voice in the planet, they only want to nail their instrument. Terms like "GAS" and threads like "What pedal should I buy next" are only obsessive consumer behaviors. Stop concentrating on gear and play the guitar!

Re: Contentment with one guitar?

Since i retired my Kramer (my first half decent axe) I solely use my Dean Hardtail with a Custom/A2P combo with splitting. This is the one guitar i use at the moment and i feel totally at home with it more than any other guitar i have played bar none. I will resume gigging in september/october time and so i want a backup. I would be content with another hardtail since i love my current one, but another side of me would like something else for variety. Something with a floyd? A strat (HSS)? Tele?

Re: Contentment with one guitar?

I guess I am one Guitar guy...I need to keep GAS at bay. I mean come on all of us prefer one tone over the other. And seriously you can get lots of tone with little gear too. You just need to work around it .I am not including accoustics in that.. Accosutic is an Accoustic.
I understand the need for a backup..but then in such a case the Back u would be diff a nice strat :) .
