Controlled feedback

Hendrix was a master at taking uncontrolled feedback and finger muting strings so that he could achive a controlled feedback , which is amazing becuase it was an over the edge amp sound and taking all his fingers off the strings would have sounded horrible. Does anyone here have a good command of feedback in their repoitiore?

Re: Controlled feedback

Its about the only thing I can actually do well on the guitar! I've spent a lot of time working on unconventional sounds, and feedback is a big part of that. I get some of my best feedback by resting the headstock on the end of the Marshall logo on my 4x12 and applying a bit of pressure so that they resonate together. I actually leave the guitar against my amp for one of my compositions and just manipulate the feedback with pedals to create melodies and texture. Where you stand has a lot to do with how its going to sound too.

Re: Controlled feedback

Like KR, I spent A LOT of time in front of a really loud amplifier, stepping on pedals, turning the guitar this way and that, adjusting the tone knob, switching pickups, etc....

The keys are volume, the "sweet spot" in front of the amp, and finding the frequencies that your guitar "likes". Upping the mids and riding a wah will help, too.

Remember to use hearing protection when you're doing stuff like this. If you're anything like me, messing with feedback gets kinda trance like, and before you know it, you've spent an hour in front of a cranked amp, your ears are ringing and everyone sounds like they're whispering :)

Re: Controlled feedback

DiMarzio FRED in a good guitar + Fulltone OCD + loud amp + good room + knowing where to stand in relation to the amp = awesome feedback control for my personal style.

Whether you playing full notes or Hitting Harmonics, will give you a different range of "noises "too!If your clever ;you can hit Note multiples[2-3-4 note or even full "chords" that scream off, on the harmonics; as they take over!:kabong:
