Converting a humbucker to RWRP?

Re: Converting a humbucker to RWRP?

Please don't be discouraged. They're good questions!
Thanks, that was very sweet. Yesterday I didn't know what OP was, let alone RWRP. Today I do. Such a classy way to say um, could you shut up for a minute, or preferably go away?

Re: Converting a humbucker to RWRP?

It would seem the neck isn't wired right if you're getting more output in the setting that is supposed to be parallel than the one that is supposed to be in series.

If switching from one coil to the other works then the split is working. I use a magnetic screwdriver or a small magnet in order to be absolutely sure which coil is active.

Regarding magnet polarity, the pickups should repel from one another when placed face with the cables both coming out from the top (or bottom).

What do you think is the likelihood that the Evo Neck is just a really weird pickup that sounds off to me because is so different from all of my other pickups (which are all, without exception, PAF-types of traditional Fender singles)?

Assuming the neck splits are working correctly, which I think they are, one coil is very obviously much stronger than the other. Would such an offset produce strange behavior in combined series or parallel mode? Unfortunately I don't have experience with how this pickup should sound wired standard.

In a normal situation, and with normal pickups, do you think there should be any difference in overall noise level between a pickup wired in series versus the same pickup wired in parallel?

That could easily be the case. Are you able to measure the DCR of each coil?

There should be less hum when wired in parallel with the same settings/signal chain because it is weaker and also has a thinner EQ.

Re: Converting a humbucker to RWRP?

Yup, I probably will. For now should I just solder that lug directly to ground or leave it disconnected?

I have a .01 value cap in a basketcase bass that I could pilfer, but 1) I don't know if that's a good value to use, and 2) that makes one more thing I gotta do whenever I clean out that bass.

I apologize for butting into your work yesterday. And I didn't get the subtle hints to go play elsewhere! I'm sorry. Is guitar great for you now? Being such a noob, I really don't think I'll be modding anything soon !! Except maybe me. May set the action up a little on Epi LP Special I P90s for slide. And learn how to my setups properly, as opposed to the first butcher job. Hope you have a very nice day with your "new" guitar !

Thanks for the well-wishes on the guitar!

The Charvel is very much a work-in-progress. Over the weekend had friends over and grabbed the LP, Strat, and 175. The Charvel has a ton of potential, but I'll need some more time with the electronics, plus I discovered once I strung it back up that it has the "Fender hump" in the fretboard near where the neck meets with the body, so that needs addressing as well for any of this to be worth it.

Gosh, sorry about the neck. Don't you hate it when a 5 minute job turns into a 5 day job?!?

Oh man, another thing I don't know about. I just went and looked at my strat, and it all looks good, in spite of my experimental setup, and the climate.

Re: Converting a humbucker to RWRP?

Its actually perfectly playable except for some of the higher notes, which rattle a lot. So I want to tackle the wiring first.

Plus, in my experience, its easy enough to replace a Fender neck if you need to. Probably even easier with a Floyd since you just use the right height nut instead of sanding down until you get it right.

EDIT: Honestly, I'm questioning whether or not the Charvel neck is really right for me anyway. I did grab the Charvel for a bit this weekend and was surprised to find my hand cramp up like crazy heavy barre chording, but maybe it just needs to be set up right? I don't get cramping on the ES-175 with 12's. And I know I really like 1957 v-shaped Fender necks. ::shrug::
