It doesn't surprise me that people would use it as a recording amp, since it's a 30W amp that sounds exactly like a scaled down JCM800 halfstack. It has a nice tight low end, and the whole amp is voiced so good I might actually keep it.

Yeah, I kinda knew what to expect with this, since I remember the SS Marshalls from the 80's, but I always wanted more gain when I was a teenager. Now that I know what tone these were designed for, I appreciate it much more, for what it does. The pots were REALLY scratchy and dropping out, so I thought I might need to replace them. As soon as I'd soaked them and twisted them for awhile, they came back sounding flawless.
This one is called a model 5010.

Trade you some T-shirts and an old lamp shade for her :)

30 watter?

Hmmm...I don't recall seeing a 30 watter in the all SS line. I remember an Artist 30 watter...tube poweramp, SS pre-amp...

Mine was the 50 Watter, all SS.

Neat amps, let me know if ya decide to sell it :)

I'm going to Goodwill tomorrow. I just want to find an old WLPX 97fm t-shirt.

I have one of those! It sounds great, and I really like how it's 30 watts. It's one of those amps that does one sound, and does one sound well. I leave the gain at 10 all the time, anything before 9 and it doesn't really kick in, and the only EQ on the distortion channel is a tone knob.

Re: Cool Amp Score! Marshall for $25 at Goodwill!!!!

I've been messing with the amp today, and I like it best with the gain on 6 and the volume on 7. The closest tone I can describe it to is Billy Duffy on the Cult 'Love' and 'Electric' CD's. I doubt I'd use it much for lead playing, but it's a great rhythm guitar amp for having that JCM800 sound out of a small practice/recording amp. I wish the Vox modeling amps had the same Marshall tone this little amp has. The Valvetronix does good cleans, and great highgain sounds, but can't pull off a cranked vintage Marshall tone nearly as good as this Marshall combo. I can't believe I found it for the price of a guitar cable! Whoever gave it to Goodwill because of scratchy pots made a huge mistake. I know he was a punk rocker because I found a Sid Vicious button stuck to the speaker magnet, when I pulled it apart.

Today, I was hanging out in Los Angeles and after seeing an outdoor concert and stopping for dinner, I drove by a Goodwill Store and decided to stop, just to see if they had any shirts or whatever. Anyway, I intantly spotted an '86 Marshall Master Lead 1-12 combo. Unfortunately, it's a solid state not tube, but the $50 price tag grabbed me. Unable to test it in the store, I was hesitant, till an announcement came over the PA "all audio gear is 50% off today." For a measly $25, I gambled and bought it.

After getting it home, I realized all the pots were scratchy as hell, so I disassembled it, and sprayed contact cleaner in the pots, and twirled them for awhile. I cleaned up the cabinet, and put it all back together. After turning it on, I jumped for joy, as the thing was like new again! They sure made SS amps better in 86, than they do now, and it even has a nice Celestion G70M speaker in it. It actually sounds really good.....straight up KISS or Judas Priest tone. 98% condition and TWENTY FIVE BUCKAROOS!!!!!!!! :smack:

Since I have most of the amps in one place right now, I took a picture of the wall of tonal delight! :burnout:

2550 Jubilee Fullstack, Bogner 101B halfstack, Marshall Master Lead Combo, Matchless Chieftain 2-12, and Fender Bassman LTD. (not pictured Vox Valvetronix head and Bogner 2-12 cab).

I have been looking for one of those solid state Marshalls for a while now and you do not see them around... That exact amp was the first real amp i owned and if i can find a dirt cheap one i'd buy another one for the hell of it.... I missed it after i sold it... I sold it to buy a Fender Princton Chorus amp in 1989... Sad as the Princton Chorus amps sound ok at bedroom levels but the speakers crap out at volumes above 4!!!!!! Poop amps for volume. My old Marshall like this one you got was pretty loud for it's size and wattage!
Good score!

You'd be picking the right one! The Jubilee is a great sounding amp, but I mostly keep it for collectibility. The Matchless is the greatest clean amp I'll ever have my hands on, so it's a keeper. The Valvetronix is for low volume practicing, and the Fender Bassman is for sale....nice amp, but I don't need it.
I like the little Marshall, but let's get real, if I want a JCM 800 sound, I'll get it out of the Bogner. I'll never sell the Bogner or Matchless.....the rest are just money in the bank. In my head, I have the 'tools' separated from the 'toys.'

I've never ever seen a good guitar or amp in any Goodwill or Salvation Army. When I spotted it, the guy at the store said he'd just put it out on the floor a few hours earlier. It was just a fluke that I stopped in there and saw it.

Re: Cool Amp Score! Marshall for $25 at Goodwill!!!!

I hate you... :lmao: I love those amps. Man, what a major score.

Re: Cool Amp Score! Marshall for $25 at Goodwill!!!!

Looks like just what you needed to help level that uneven pile of amps on the right. :)

Re: Cool Amp Score! Marshall for $25 at Goodwill!!!!

I just dusted off my old Marshall Lead 12 combo amp last week. Something about the attack is a bit too "crisp" for my liking. When I graze the top two strings, it's just not warm enough. It's almost "too Hi-Fi". Still fun to plunk around on, though.

It was my first amp. Received it as a birthday present back in Feb. 1989.

Immediately came home and tried to play Welcome to the Jungle, Crazy Babies (Ozzy), and Metallica's "One". I've got to admit, I think I was trying to play some Winger as well.
