Cool Guitar Mods

What's your mods of choice to do to your guitar that make it cooler than you're friends' guitar? The additions you put on that make it look more 'badass' maybe?

I'm trying to come up with some more things to add to my custom warmoth guitar (jackson neck / strat body), here's what I've got so far:

  1. custom paint job (yellow/black hazard markings)
  2. diamondplate aluminium pickguard
  3. middle control replaced with active mid/gain boost
  4. reshaped and painted the truss rod
  5. hazard/warning decals

My favorite EVH inspired mod. No, it's not stripes. ...... A "Tone" knob on the volume control. Cheap and simple. :D

i base my homemade guitars on EVH's early strats! but on a superstrat that i'm adding a floyd too i bought a P-Bass volume knob for it like EVH's Kramers had.... some say they were MXR knobs on Eddies but the PBass knobs look the deal....

I always thought those knobs looked weird. Definitely different though. I don't know why, but I prefer knobs with numbers. It could be because my first electric had them and I've just always had guitars with them.

Re: Cool Guitar Mods

Even if it's a mod done with new "stock" parts, I have to make some sort of modification to every guitar I own before it feels like mine.

Shoot, I treated my HWY1 like a step child until I bought a Fender black accessory kit. Cheap cosmetic change with Fender parts and it fianlly became mine. Not unique in any way, but still mine.

Sometimes I'll go all-out by ordering some really trick knobs, like the pearliod inset chrome bonnet knobs on my aria strat.

Unless it's a project, I probably won't repaint a guitar. I'm leaving hardware out of discussion, because I see hardware upgrades as playability improvements, and therefore not done to be "cool."

I know what you mean, I'm considering doing something like that to my 2004 AM Standard Strat. The chrome blue looked really cool and unique when I saw it in the guitar shop, a big reason for me buying actually (compared to other strats), but now I've seen other people with the exact same guitar I'd like to change it a bit to make it feel more like MY guitar. One thing that really does need changing is the saddles, with graphite ones, as it's almost impossible to play without breaking a string at least once a week.

Sounds like the saddles have burrs or it's the strings being used. I rarely ever break a string on my Strat, and I'm pretty hard on it. The saddles are stock and it's an 11 year old guitar.

It's a combination of both, and the fact that I'm also pretty hard on it too. The saddles keep getting burrs on them all the time even when they've been sorted out, and I like the tonal changes graphite has so I'm gonna go down that route for that guitar and my custom Warmoth too that has vintage strat saddles.

THis sounds like you may ether have burrs on the saddles or a sharp corner where the string exits the baseplate.......
