"Hi Lou. I enclosed a pics of me and my '51 Tele-# 0436 and '53 Tele-# 2177. I totally wore all the finish off the back side of the '53 neck by playing it and it was silky smooth. Pic of '53 was taken in early 1972. I had hair
then, lol.
My '51 was much less broken in, and I didn't bring it out to gigs much. Besides, it had an "A" neck which was almost too narrow for my hand, although it taught me to play many 3-fingered chords with 2 fingers. The
size of the neck is included with the date signing under the finish at the but of the neck. The "B" neck is my size. I sadly sold my collection in the mid 1980s.
Roy Buchanon came to my to my shop to see my Teles because he heard I had them. But my Teles weren't in the shop at that time, so he asked me to bring them to his hotel room that evening to check them out. He gave me tickets to his concert for the following night.
Each of these guitars were played by Roy Buchannon in his hotel room and I played his cherished '53 Tele, also. We took the necks off both of mine to check dates, etc. He made me a modest offer for my pair, in which I politely
said no thanks, I'm keeping them. This was just after the release of his second album.
I even touched the hole in the headpiece of his '53. He explained to me that he shot that hole with a .22 caliber thru it. I thought that was kinda odd. And the hole looked like it was a perfect drill hole. Seems like the maple
headstock would have shattered or splintered from gunshot. I still wonder to this day about that.
I got my '52 a year or 2 later, It had been routed for a Humbucker neck PU before I got it. It didn't have the original case either.
I found one of those large original tone capacitors that I removed from one of my original 2. It was wired to the rhythm position on the 3-way switch from one of them. Totally unusable. I should have another one around
somewhere. They should be valuable to an "Originality" fanatic."
I thought some of you Tele-fan-addicts might get a kick out of his meeting with Roy Buchanan. And out of Roy's comments about the hole in the peghead! :smack: Quite a joker!
then, lol.
