Cool pedal score at GC!

I got GC's latest flyer in the mail a couple of days ago. My heart skipped a beat when I saw that they've dropped the price on the BBE Green Screamer overdrive to $50. Lately the Digitech Bad Monkey has gotten a lot of love because it's a great TS-9 type overdrive and easy on the budget. The Green Screamer is an amazing sounding TS-9 type pedal, but until now it was at least twice the price of a Bad Monkey.

I got a friend of mine a used Green Screamer last summer for his B-Day and I've wanted one ever since I heard his. Last night I went to my local GC and snapped up their whole stock of them!! Two Green Screamers! And I wanted three, so they said they'll call me when more come in. At that price, I decided to get one for my brother and one for another friend! Every guitarist ought to have a Green Screamer! Sorry, I'm not buyin' one for you.

While I was there, I saw they had some Digitech pedals sitting out of the box. I asked about those and the guy said they were floor demos that they were selling off cheap. I got a Hot Head for $20!!

I loved the Hot Head soon as I plugged it in. Who was it that said the Hot Head is Digitech's DS-1? No way!! The DS-1 sounds buzzy and distorted even at its lowest gain setting, and with your guitar volume down. Blecchhhh, unless you're after a massively distorted sound and you use it in front of your high gain amp.

The Hot Head's distortion is completely different. From trying it out last night, I noticed the quality of the distortion sounded more natural. It's not a plastic, electronic buzz like the DS-1's. And it cleaned up when I picked lightly!! I loved that. Of course it's capable of higher gain settings where it wouldn't clean up as much, and starts to sound real aggressive with more gain.

I'm even happier than the day I walked into GC and they were selling off all the AC adapters they had laying around (no doubt which belonged to gear they had sold, but which they can never be bothered to look for when you're buying the gear) for $5 a piece.

Another cool pedal alert!!
This may warrant its own thread.
Last night I checked at GC and they had more Green Screamers in stock. I'd wanted to get one more as a gift for a guitarist friend for Christmas. So while I was there, I saw that they also had more BBE Free Fuzz pedals in stock. This pedal is also on sale for $50. I'm not much into the hippy trippy fuzz tone, but I decided to plug one in and take a listen.

I ended up buying two!! One for me and one as a gift!

The Free Fuzz is not a hippy trippy blatty, farty sounding Fuzz Face knockoff. I was able to play minor 7th chords, and major chords with the third left in with clarity! Only a slight hint of that typical fuzz pedal hash to remind me I was playing a fuzz. The real fun started when I started playing playing Pink Floyd solos through it on the Mexi- Strat I grabbed to try the pedal out. I think what BBE had in mind in designing this pedal was not a "Purple Haze" or "Spirit in the Sky" kind of fuzz, but something closer to the 1973 "ram's head" Big Muff that David Gilmour used in the 70's on Pink Floyd's ambums! The Free Fuzz contributed an aggresive edge, yet it was easy to hear the tone of the guitar speaking, and clarity when playing chords. The amount of gain available, even when the gain knob is maxed, is not as much as on a newer Big Muff or typical fuzz, but this unit doesn't trash your guitar's tone and take over with its own tone, it augments your guitar's tone! If you are a fan of Gilmour's tones, the Free Fuzz may be a cheap yet effective alternative to tracking down and then paying $100's for an early 70's Big Muff.

What's in it? Is it more or less another 808 clone, or what? SMD?

That sounds like fun!

Not me.

The Hot Head is essentially an SMT conversion of one of the old DOD distortions, but I don't know which one.

Re: Cool pedal score at GC!

ok, I know I shouldn't have ordered it, since I'm looking at about $100 to fix my JCM900 right now, but... how can I resist a quality TS clone for $50?! I guess my marshall may spend an extra week in lockup...

Thanks for the heads up, man!
