Could a neck be too thick?

tone?

New member
So i am thinking of getting a warmoth pro neck for the double rod.

i saw this pretty nice neck on the showcase that has a fatback contour. I am thinking of choosing this cause frankly the standard thin sounds way too thin for me. i mean .800 to .850? sounds too too thin to me.

The fatback is kinda intense being that it is a full 1" . But i was thinking that if it is too thick i can sand it down. I can remove wood but cant put more.

so my question is that would that be overkill in a double rodded neck, for a super strat guitar?? could the tone be too thick?

i just want to give a double rod a whirl, cause the single ones sound too 'hollow' to me for a super strat guitar.

any ideas guys?

Re: Could a neck be too thick?

I understand the fat back is similar to the original Fender Jeff Beck strat neck. I played one of those, it was very thick and uncomfortable, but some people like it

Re: Could a neck be too thick?

hey man since you have a axis how thick is it compared to that??

Re: Could a neck be too thick?

i dont think the fatback is like the old jb neck, different contour i believe.

i have a strat that is 1" at the nut and is probably 1.125" at the heal and i love the thing and it sounds awesome. fat but very focused

Re: Could a neck be too thick?

Fatter necks give a fatter tone in general. I've never played a Warmoth Fatback, but I baby sat a friend's JB Strat for a couple of months and the neck was great. It was huge, but quite comfy. Of course, I'm the kind of guy that thinks a LP's 59 contour is fast. :burnout:

I played an epi G400 at GC and the neck was so thick I could barely get around it let alone play it!

Re: Could a neck be too thick?

A neck can definately be too thick. Fast playing is something I can't do with some of my guitars. I'm not talking 32nd notes here, I'm talking 16th notes. The necks are just too darn big.

Necks can be too thick.
USACG offer more possibilities then Warmoth I'd check them out. Warmoth also offer the EVH and Clapton contours...

Indeed. That profile feels and sounds good.

Of course, I have HUGE hands. A neck can be too big or small depending on the player. If it feels good, it feels good.

If this makes any sense at all, I've found looking at the exact specs to be only part of the equation. A well made neck, whether thinner or thicker than you normally play, can really suprise you when it's finally in your hands. Shape and feel plays a huge role for me.

Re: Could a neck be too thick?

i've been wanting to try a Boatneck for ages myself.... i like beefy necks if they are the right shape... Only guitar i've ever had trouble with is my 76 Les Paul Deluxe.... It had a thicker neck shape when it was new but when i had the neck rebuilt they custom made a new fingerboard out of slightly thicker then average rosewood... before the neck warped on me for the 3rd time, the Rosewood board was worn down from the refrets and sanding the neck straight.... it was a comfy neck then... after it was repaired i had all sorts of medical trouble with my wrists muscles...

one neck i love the thickness off is a 1987 Charvel.... it has a thick neck on it. love it

Re: Could a neck be too thick?

I like big ol' necks. The Gibson R8 profile is a shade smaller than I would consider ideal. However, necks can definitely be too big. Years ago I had a 1971 LP Deluxe that needed a new neck. After talking to Gibson, they pointed me to a shop that did their second work at the time- I asked for a "50s style baseball bat neck." They sent me a neck with not just a tree trunk- but a frickin' sequoia. I had the guitar for several years, and it was always my least favorite guitar (but I really liked the idea of bringing a guitar back from the dead). Somewhere around 5 years ago I had Ian Anderson of Lentz guitars shave the neck down- unfortunately, when the neck was built, the truss rod was really far back- there was only so much they could do to shave the neck to a reasonable size. It was still a touch too big.

To get an idea- from left to right:
1959 LP Special
Re-necked 1971 LP Deluxe
1998 R8
