I just looked at ceriatone amps, and im thinking of getting one of their complete amps, but im curious, would I be able to play just the completed chassis without a cover or tolex whatever its called?

I REALLY like the open chassis type look !

I reminds me of the old valve radios from the '40's !!!
I would love to have one like that on top of a boutique laq. tweed 2x12 cab, for that ultra retro super expensive boutique kinda look !
(obviously it will ONLY be for home-use !!!)

Assuming they fit, you could always get one of these Hammond ventilated chassis covers: http://www.angela.com/catalog/chassis/Chassis.html.

I built an Ax84 P1-extreme recently, and I need something to cover the tubes and transformers. I'd like a head cab, but the cheapest ones I've found are in the $200 range, and I have trouble justifying that, considering that the kit cost my ~$200. Their price is right, they serve my utilitarian needs, and I think they look pretty cool:http://www.hammondmfg.com/dwg22.htm

Re: could I play a chassis only?

Just so you know, becaise it oculd confuse people...it's called a head cab, the cover is a cloth dust cover that goes over the head...

Now, yes you can play through just a chassis and a cab but I wouldn't suggest it...it's easy to get zapped not to mention if it were to fall it could cause some real damage...

No matter what chassis you get from ceriatone you can get a head cab from Mojo tone UNLESS you get a Trainwreck, if you get a wreck clone you need to go through Jeff Swanson for a cab...

Re: could I play a chassis only?

Some chassis's need to be shielded. If you notice most tube amp cabs have metal shielding where the chassis mounts. I had noisy oscillation and EMI in my Homebrew when I 1st made it. I took a aluminum baking tray and cut it to size, Than stapled it in my head box. Problem solved.

Re: could I play a chassis only?

If you look at MattPete's link, there are both aluminum and steel chassis that come with bottoms to complete the shielding. Look sweet to me for an AX84 P1 type project.

Mojo makes really nice cabs, but I agree that a box for a head (a.k.a. "head cab") at $217+ looks expensive for a DIY head. Until you've got Scott_F's experience anyway ;)
