Cover Discoloration?

Hello,

I purchased an SH-15 Alternative 8 pickup (great pickup btw!) with the metal cover on November 30, 2015 and installed it in my Les Paul a few days later. I have had the guitar since September of 2012.

The problem I am having is that there is discoloration on the pickup that doesn't come off. The original '57 Classic is in the neck position, and no such discoloration has occurred (nor did it occur on the original '57 Classic bridge pickup, which I no longer have).

Is this normal for Seymour Duncan pickups or did I get a bad cover? I thought maybe using chrome polish or something is required, but I have never had to polish the '57 Classics.

Below are photos of the pickups. That dark part on the lower-left corner of the bridge pickup is not a shadow, and I included a picture of both pickups to show the condition of the neck pickup as well (I included both because the second pic really looks like a shadow). I hope I did this right...

Very strange. I'd send the pics to customer service, and see what they say The link is at the bottom of seymourduncan.com.

I had some pickups that were 5 years old and they developed several hairline cracks in the bobbins, and they helped me out with those.

Yeah, I emailed them with a link to this 'cause their email form didn't have a thing to upload pictures.

I think it's weird too. This guitar has never left my living room and I wipe it down every time I'm done playing. I'm thinking maybe just a bad batch of whatever it is made of?

Some people would love this because they like reliced guitars but I'm not into it. lol

If you don't hear from them in a few days, let me know...I will see what I can find out.

Re: Cover Discoloration?

They said this is normal because it is nickel, and they offered to make an exception to replace it, but I decided not to bother since I will be in the same boat a year from now anyway.

They said a chrome cover would hold up "slightly" longer so I could buy a chrome cover to put on it. I wouldn't say 3 years longer and running (with the other pickup) is "slightly" longer but time is relative I suppose.

Anyway, I'm going to look around for something made to polish nickel and see if that helps, if I not I will put a chrome cover on it and re-pot it.
