I recently traded for one of the last gen 120w blue voodoo heads. I'm having trouble finding out how to read Crate serial numbers to determine the year.Does anyone know how to tell??

Re: Crate Blue Voodoo 120 head

Never played a CBV but I can say I really liked the Ampegs of the early 90s. IMO that was their finest era for guitar amps.

Re: Crate Blue Voodoo 120 head

I have a Blue Voodoo 50 watt head (Blue "splash on panel). Going to buy a good attenuator and see what kind of tone I can get out of it.
I've used it some with a 2x12 that has a Celestion Marshall Heritage G12 and a Celestion Relic 30. Sounds pretty good through that combo.
But it's still too loud to open it up and see how it REALLY sounds. LOL.
Lots of gain.

I had a BV60 head many moons ago. If you take the time to EQ it right and use really good speakers and cab, it is a good sounding amplifier. Clean was a bit sterile, but the distortion channel could sing. I did a darn recording of Kiss Calling Dr. Love with it that I can't find now, that sounded almost exactly like the one on Kiss Alive II. That real heavy type of distortion. I didn't give a rat's a## about the neighbors, lol. I cranked it up.

Oh, one thing I forgot to mention. I use a BBE Sonic Maximizer in the effects loop. WHAT A DIFFERENCE IN SOUND!

Re: Crate Blue Voodoo 120 head

Man, I remember seeing those at GC in the late 90's and early 00's. I loved the way they light up with the blue. Does it run 6L6 or EL34's...or something else? How many pre-amp tubes? I can't remember if the were geared to a British sound or an American sound.

Anyhow, cool amp from the end of the hair metal and 80's rock era.

MegaDave was obviously a fan (or at least endorsee).

Those tubes look so effing cool through the front.

Combo in a pawn shop down the road from here. I'd get one.

Mine has 6L6 power tubes. Running all JJ 12AX7 pre and matched set of 6L6 Groove Tubes.
It originally has 12v filament bulbs with a yellow/orange plastic cover. I pulled those and got some blue LED lights.

Negative, Megadave was only a cabinet endorser. The endorsement contract that he and Marty had with Crate was floating around Harmony Central years ago. Bascially it said that live shows were to have Crate logo'd cabs and Martys personal clinics and appearances were to be done with Blue voodoo amps but as far as what was toured with and recorded with that was up to their discretion.

I saw Sammy Hagar's band was using BV's. If you look around, you can sometimes find the blue Crate 4x12 that has Vintage 30's for really good prices. I missed one a while back for $150. They made another one that had the El Cheapo speakers, so you have to be careful.

Re: Crate Blue Voodoo 120 head

I have one, and I hated it. It’s currently gutted for another salvage build I’m doing and auctioning. I remember when they first came out when I was a kid in the early 90’s. Some people though they were cool because of the fuzzbox like distortion they had, but that wore off pretty quick. I found it thin and hashy sounding, with no substance behind the notes for lead playing. That said, crate used some nice and beefy transformers for it though.
