Crate Stealth GT-50C Combo to head conversion

This is an amp I have been wanting to try for a while now. This is the Lee Jackson designed head, which has 2 gain stages, one of them is similar to a JCM 800. I have a good friend who has the 50w head and it sounds incredible. I found this combo for pretty cheap and planned on converting it to a head, which I have seen done before. Unfortunately, most of the pots are scratchy and the volume pot is super sensitive. For the most part, it sounds like garbage through this stock speaker. I attempted to connect it to a 2x12 cab, but it didnt sound much different.

These are becoming somewhat hard to find for cheap anymore. I have a line on a guy that can make a Pine head cabinet for this conversion for a pretty good price. Now the question is-should i have the amp checked out/evaluated, then go through with the conversion OR just scrap this project all together since it may end up being more than the amp is worth.

i would 100% check the amp guts out first. and a pine cab is cool for speakers, but not sure why youd use it for a head cab?

The Stealth GT-50 is the only proper tube amp I have left!

I would definitely have it checked out. Clearly something isn't quite right if it sounds terrible through different cabs/speakers. It should sound solid through its own speaker, as well.

As for converting the combo to a head, I'm personally not a fan unless the stock cab is truly trashed.
