The first guy is a perfect drummer. Extremely smooth flow ,impressive creative cymbal work. And his footwork is to die for.
Compering him to the second guy is nonsense ,since 1. one is a metal song and drumming is just a part of the fundament.
The second guy wanks the crap out of the kit ,and it's a solo. No comparison here.
I prefer the first guy in any band situation. He might not throw the sticks ,but his steady accuracy is highest level.

You are easily amused! The 1st guy can barely hit the toms when he goes for a fill - he's not a well rounded drummer. Anyone can play 16th and maybe 32nd notes (didn't count out the guys playing) with a double kick pedal. A solo is SUPPOSED to move a little... you're right; there is no direct comparison but it should be easy to say that the 1st guy would never be able to play what the 2nd did. It is hard to imagine #2 in a band simply because we have only seen him soloing... But there is no doubt he could.

I am a drummer since 20 years ,and quite a good one. I won't say he couldn't even hit the toms ,he has a nice flowing style.

the second guy barely "plays" the instrument like Bozzio or Mangini. He created interesting ,unorthodox runs and fills them with latin and other typical "look I am a drummer" stuff. It's like a Guitar player with lots of tappings ,hammerings ,slides and other shred tricks. I still prefer Marty Friedman ,who does move me more with the right amount of technical ,but mostly well expressed solos.

My Favorits are
Bozzio , Hoglan , Ted kirkpatrick (Tourniquet. very good drummer).

Very cool. I have heard of Terry Bozzio (he is an amazing technical drummer, but never heard of the others) I am a sucker for powerful drummers, and odd timings. Hence Matt Cameron and Jimmy Chamberlin being my favorites. There are so many great drummers out there. I think a great solo should be unusual and full of flashy crap. After all, that's what a drum solo is - a chance to show off.

Ya know, I don't think I've ever heard a solo from either of my favorite drummers, now that I think about it.

Well ,kirkpatrick and Hoglan are allmost playing solos on songs. very cool ideas ,nice expresion and constant "drive".

Check Jarzombecks youtube videos. You might like them!

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CWO4p_GnWUo - Jarzombek is really clean. Barefoot? - that's like a girl with D's, running without a bra. lol

Didn't like Kirkpatrick - in that vein, based on the two solos I watched parts of, I prefer Tim Alexander.

Hoglan... Dennis Chambers of metal.
