crazy to order an all maple San Dimas strat body?

Thinking of getting a little nuts and ordering an all maple San Dimas style strat body. Either vintage strat trem, or hardtail-- leaning towards the hardtail.

Depending on who I order from, it'll either be soft maple or hard rock maple. Most likely soft maple as it should be considerably lighter than hard rock (but still heavy). I just like the idea of a really hard strat body that lets the pickup really do it's thing. Plus I keep listening to old Dokken and watching Lynch's stuff-- maybe that's my problem ;)

Would this just be crazy? Should I just knock it off and go with alder or something more traditional?

I've always thought that ash has a bit better tone and resonance than maple. The closed pores are fantastic for super smooth and strong necks. Ash always seems to have a more complex tone with better harmonics. Alder's cool but just doesn't have that "forward lean" that maple and ash have IMO.

Ash is such a lively sounding wood... it's my favorite tonewood for solid bodied 25.5 scale guitars.

Er, heavy, yeah. Soooo awesome though. Find a Kamikaze or an old maple Kramer to play, you'll see.

what is it about that weight and density that makes it so awesome though-- Is it the fact that the body doesn't absorb hardly any of the string vibration, and that results in more for the pickup to, er... pick up?

I guess it depends on what you mean by "super heavy"

If I remember correctly, the guitar weighs about 8.5 pounds.

that's not too bad. I remember Lynch talking about his original maple Tiger being like 14 pounds or so--- yikes!

Couldn't tell ya...

I judge things with my ears, it either sounds good or it don't.

One man's "bright" is another man's "cut.

Don't over think it, just do it.

I've had a few different maple bodied super strats, all were Les Paul heavy, neckthru Kami being the heaviest, brightest. Pickup selection is paramount, I really, really love them with Super3's, go figure.

Yes, I have three maple bodied guitars, and the JB seems to works best in all of them.
