Turn on the radio and play along... just find an instrument in the aural field that aou think you can duplicate (or improve on) and go for it ;)

It sounds to me like you already know what you need to do, but can use some help getting motivated.

My vote: find a good teacher.

Some very practical approaches...where the rubber meets the road. Thanks for your insights. I have tried your tips on slowing down and it is definetely giving me a new voice. At first I couldn't do it so I played solos to AC/DC The JACK and Ride On to get back to the blues a litttle bit and force me to slow down. Then to go one further I tried playing solos over just anything that popped up on 103.5 in S. Calif. This is an easy listening station. What do you know...I was not playing licks or riffs or scales or anything structural. I was just doing what my ears told me to do and it sounded good. I went back and improvised over some heavy stuff and I gotta admit it sounds better when your solos sing at times rather then just rip.

Amazing what improvising to Commodore's "Three Times a Lady" on the local radio can do for you. You are forced to listen and blend the solo to the song cause anything else sounds crappy. There is no fast and heavy distorted rhythm to make anything fast within a certain mode sound good. It is like the above poster said it strips you of your distortion, tremolo, and speed. You are left only with your creativity that must blend melodicly with a soft slow song.

I took this approach to REALLY listen to the rhythms on metal stuff that I play and not a huge difference but definetely a difference. It is a start...thanks guys this is a great forum.

I am going to look into some of the jazz stuff you guys were talking about. I bet that opens up a new set of doors.

I seem to be quoting Frank Zappa alot these dayz! He once said that writing about music is like dancing to architecture. LOL! That being said how bout some sound clips so we can hear what you're concerned with in your playing. If you can't record and post now then give us a list of tunes from some artists in the genre of your interest so we can get a taste of where you want to go with this.

Listen to folk music, it will give you some great ideas in your head, from there it depends on your natrual ability to write. My stuff is normaly slower or calmer after a session of folk music for some reason. And I'm going to start learning slide soon with a teacher which I am really hopeing will give me some great ideas.
