Crunch Box Drive

how much drive does the crunch box have? the sound clips kind of made it sound like it had as much distortion as you can get in a hotrodded marshall. i have a brit overdrive right now, but it doesn't get that kind of gain, so i'm thinking this crunch box might be just what i'm after. anyone know? wah wah, didn't you post a couple of clips a while back?

Re: Crunch Box Drive

The Crunch Box has tons of gain..You'll never have to dime the gain as far as I'm concerned..I never had to put the gain past 3 o'clock..At that setting, you get an 80's JCM 800 (2210 model) type distortion reminiscent to "Ride The Lightning" era Metallica..At least that's what i'm getting through my clean Fender amps.

Re: Crunch Box Drive

+1, its definatly got tons of gain on tap, and its definatly an 80's Marshall tone in a pedal.

Very brutal though if you back it off it can give some nice classic rock tones so its not a one trick pony

Here's those Crunch Box clips again BB, the gain on the 4 samples is set at 9, 12, 3 o'clock and then dimed. Tone at 12 o'clock. Neck pickup first, then bridge, at each setting. Running into Fender Super Champ running clean. No further EQ or compression, recorded with a Shure Beta 57, Metric Halo ULN-2 interface, into Logic.

Hi-gain Marshall is what it gives you. Very nice box, I love mine. But its not going to do ENGL, Mesa, 5150, and all that style.

hey thanks again wahwah, that was a great clip man. sounds like there's plenty of gain at 9 o'clock! at 12 o'clock it beats my brit pedal turned full. looks like i'm once again going to trade-up for new gear :grumble:

were you digging in a lot or was that just the saturation from a pumped amp? maybe it was both?

You're welcome my friend. Yeah, there's lots of gain to be had, and Michael Ibrahim was very specific in making the Crunch Box a distinctively Marshally pedal. It's great for adding a Marshall style "channel" to just about any amp (there's also an internal trimpot which he calls "Presence" which helps in matching the overall voicing to a specific amp). You can hear what it's doing to a single 10" Fender combo! The amp was running fairly clean, just on the edge of slight breakup (that's where most drive pedals work best) and I was digging in quite hard on 11-49 gauge strings.

I don't think you'll be disappointed with a Crunch Box, and they are very reasonably priced when you consider their tone and build quality.

Re: Crunch Box Drive

Gee! Again CB thread. Now I actually have a brit-sounding amp, but still the od channel is a bit compressed. GAS!
Well, actually I'm gonna buy eq or booster first.

Re: Crunch Box Drive

I've had my Crunch Box for a few weeks now. It's a very nice pedal. Does the higain Marshall tone in Spades.

how do you think it will sound on say a mesa or fender with 6L6 tubes? is this one of those pedals that sounds better on british amps or anything (pardon the ignorant question, but i'm no expert on these things)?

I use mine with 6L6 loaded vintage Fenders and it sounds great! I'm getting both Fender and Marshall-esque sounds with one amplifier..Sure beats having to own both!

BB, you are looking for a "marshall pedal" to push your Laney? :chairshot

Re: Crunch Box Drive

I used a CB for well over a year with good results, with a fender and a crate tube amp. It does the marshall 800 style tone and has more than enough gain for a rock to metal tone.

I liked it with the gain set a little lower for more dynamics. :)

no, actually i just like the sound of that crunch box. my el diablo sounds something like a marshal crossed with a mesa. it has stock el34 tubes, but i'm probably going to switch to 6L6s soon. that's why i was wondering if it would still sound as cool.

as far as the laney is concerned, yes again i have done it. i know i know, but this is what i said i would do before. i was able to get all my money back from the laney and i went ahead and bought the mesa express 5:50. with the money left over, i bought some recording gear.

now i'm finally at the equipment i'm going to stick with. as much as i like the laney, the mesa works better for me. not only that, it has a 5 watt mode that i can push at low volumes for recording my own stuff. this should work out a lot better for me and the tone seems to fit my style better. i'll definitely post some clips now that i have some recording gear. thanks for all the help by the way.

... oh yeah, i'm also wondering if the crunch box will sound cool on my mesa
