Crunch Box Question

I've never tried a crunch box but I got to try a supposedly crunch box clone. This clone has a "fizzy" top end. Is that a characteristic of the real deal crunch box? I can get good sounds, especially lead sounds, from it, but I wish the "fizziness" would go away.

Re: Crunch Box Question

I've had a CB for 2 years and it is not at all fizzy. I will say that it is very harmonically rich that "may" be perceived as fizzy.

Re: Crunch Box Question

I couldn't stand the Crunchbox I had. Sounded like it wanted to be part distortion pedal and part Big Muff.
There was a fuzziness to it I didn't care for. I dislike Big Muffs.

Re: Crunch Box Question

I have a Crunch Box that sounds great. It is never fizzy, but then I ran it more like an OD than a distortion - that is, with gain around 9:30 - 10:00 and volume much higher.

Re: Crunch Box Question

Maybe it's a clone thing. Perhaps the real crunch box doesn't have this "fizziness". I gotta play one. Or perhaps that solid-state amp in the store could be the culprit?

I've got a Crunch Box clone and it is about halfway between an OD and a Distortion. Not enough gain as a distortion pedal and starts sounding weird, but turn it down a bit and it's a great OD.

I suppose if the internal presence control was dimed you could see it as fizz. Mine was lots of low mid grind.

Re: Crunch Box Question

I built my own Crunchbox and I Put the presence control pot on the outside...I use this pedal on my board the most...I don't use the stock chip in mine and prefer the Burr Brown chip instead..

Re: Crunch Box Question

I've built quite a few Crunch Box clones and I have a stock v2. I don't think any of them are any fizzier than any other amp or pedal distortion, but you have to watch your tone and (internal) presence controls. I prefer to have the presence trimpot set flat, or with a bit of the presence cut. I almost never need the tone pot at noon. 10-11 o'clock seems to be about right.
