Current Modelling/Headphone Amps

I am currently an apartment dweller, so making noise is out of the question. Can anyone update me on the current offerings of headphone of modeling amps?

Keep in mind that I play across the distortion spectrum, so cleans and low and mid gains are as important as high.

Re: Current Modelling/Headphone Amps

check out the vox valvetronix tonelabs? I am sure they would also rock through low volume studio monitors as well. Peavey Vypr stuff sucks big time

Re: Current Modelling/Headphone Amps

Another vote for the Vox ToneLab. I've got the first one, and it's terrific through headphones.

I also like the Line6 stuff. I have a TonePort GX and a Pocket POD, and they're super-flexible and sound great. The computer editing is extra nice.

Re: Current Modelling/Headphone Amps

I had the Tonelab LE for a couple of years. Was a great modeler. Was definitely the best one I've ever had. Until...

I picked-up an Eleven Rack the day after last Thanksgiving. Wow... what a great unit it's been. Especially since I upgraded it with the new expansion pack. It just sounds and feels so real and tube-like. My 11R has to compete with the Bogner XTC Classic sitting next to it and it DOES do that very well. The Bogner is still one of the kings of channel-switching tube amps. It's not going anywhere. But I play the 11R six days to every one day with the XTC. And a part of that reason is that the 11R sounds great at any volume. I will admit that I don't use headphones with it, but I do play it quietly often and it's great. Worth checking into if you can find a good deal on one.

Re: Current Modelling/Headphone Amps

One thing that occurred to me about the Line6 Pocket POD that makes it really convenient is that it can run on batteries, which might be especially useful for headphone use. That way, you're not teathered to a computer, to AC power, to anything. You can clip the thing on your guitar strap and play through headphones out in the middle of a cornfield, if you want.

Re: Current Modelling/Headphone Amps

If you don't need portability, check out Peavey's Revalver software.

If you want it in a pedal, Vox Tonelab ST. Don't get the new EX, they changed some of the functionality for the worse.

Re: Current Modelling/Headphone Amps

So the consensus so far is tonelab for tone and pocket pod for convenience. The eleven rack is out of my budget, so that's out.

Thanks for the info so far.

I don't need portability, but I do not have a computer interface, so I figured that software wouldn't be a good solution.

Good to know about the vox.

Re: Current Modelling/Headphone Amps

I haven't used GOOD headphones with my Mustang, but some of the models sounds really good and some sound kinda weird. But I'm using cheap earbuds and I'll bet higher quality earphones would help. One thing to consider that even a modeling amp tends to sound better cranked up a bit because the master volume pot itself will limit the response of the amp model due to its mechanical limits. So you might find, even with the Vox or the Fender, that you might have to push the volume up to get the "best" of whatever model you're going after.

Re: Current Modelling/Headphone Amps

GDEC 3-30 over the Mustang for home use. GDEC has a real interface with 100 presets that you can name yourself, plus SD card storage. I like to store a bunch of mp3 backing tracks on my 3-30, tie them to presets, and just pick a song and go.

Compare for yourself... Happy hunting!

Re: Current Modelling/Headphone Amps

The Tonelab is still one of the best units I heard, and very practical.

Some effects are useless but specific selection of useless labels depend on the person. I find the treble booster to be the most useless in there.

The thing I don't like is that there are very limited routing options which makes it hard to combine the sucker with other gear.

Re: Current Modelling/Headphone Amps

If you want a multi-purpose solution the Marshall Class 5 is a small tube amp with headphone jack.

Re: Current Modelling/Headphone Amps

I can't say anything bad about the tonelab. How many Vox and marshall models does one really need though/

I am a Roland Cube fan personally, and IMO, unless going with something that doesn't have a speaker it is really the only legit alternative to the Vox.

Perfect set of amps and tones:

Clean - Fender Blackface/Roland JC120
A little grit - Vox and Bassman
Dirt; 3 levels - Marshall stack, 5150, and Mesa Rectifier
Also an acoustic sim if you care.

Simple fx - 1 knob for swirl and such, and another for delay/verb

Line out for recording or headphones. Available in an assortment of sizes. Some cool features on them depending on the size, like presence knob on the larger ones.

Very zen compared to the Vox. What I love is you dial in a sound in seconds. I spend way les time twiddling and way more playing.

The sounds are all very good. Even Lew approved of the Micro-cube. I'd love one for the bedroom!

Re: Current Modelling/Headphone Amps

My vote goes to the Fender Mustang.

Paired with the FUSE software it's a combo you just can' beat, specially considering the price.
