Custom 5 in 68 Les Paul RI Custom?

Re: Custom 5 in 68 Les Paul RI Custom?

I've got a C5/'59N in an LP Std & it sounds great. In some guitars & woods, a C5 can be a little thin & scooped, but in a LP, that's filled in. Go for it.

Re: Custom 5 in 68 Les Paul RI Custom?

The consensus here is that the C5 is at it's best in Gibson styled instruments.
I find it's ballsy lows and hot but still vintage sounding voice to be very versatile.
As Blueman stated, it doesnt sound good in every guitar, but Les Pauls, SGs, PRS, Explorers, and Flying V's all love it. I guess it's the Mahogany/Maple cap combo that balances well with it's voice.

A 68 Les Paul RI Custom? :11: Let me see it!

If a get another LP it'll be a '58 or '59 Chambered RI or a '68 custom RI.

For a '68 custom RI, I'd personally would get Seymour or MJ to wind me they're take on '68 t tops. A C5 will kick a$$ in that LP, though. ;) A '59n/C5 or PGn/C5 set would be my default choice.

I found the C5 too bright so you might want to have a 250k on hand.

It's just like this, Tri-Burst flamed...

The classics that are in it sound fine, but I have always been more of an Alnico V guy.
I am planning on putting a jazz neck with the custom 5.
I was also considering a SH-15 Alternative 8 but think that might be a little much.

The 68 is very heavy as it is not weight relieved or chambered and sustains greater than any of my other pauls.

Have you played a guitar or two with a JazzN? A lot of us consider it to be pretty bland. I much prefer a '59N, and it balances better with a C5. Some guys say those can be boomy in a LP (never bothered me), and if that's a concern, there are other high quality A5 neck PAF's out there.

Re: Custom 5 in 68 Les Paul RI Custom?

I wouldn't go with a C5 in a '68 RI. Here's why.

The C5 is somewhat bright. A '68 Les Paul Custom would not only have a maple top, but an ebony fingerboard, typically making them bright (though not all. Every guitar is different).

I had a '68 Flametop Custom that was bright. A C5 didn't work, though a regular Custom (with ceramic mag) sounded great, especially for hard rock.

Re: Custom 5 in 68 Les Paul RI Custom?

I used a Custom 5 in the bridge of my '79 LP Custom, paired with a 59 neck. I thought it sounded great, and used this combo for a couple of years until ultimately I switched to a Fralin set in that guitar.

Too bright in a Custom? Not at all, IMO. Plus, not only does my Custom have an ebony board and a maple cap, but it's a Norlin - meaning, maple neck too.

Cool guitars, but I don't think the maple neck adds that much brightness on your Norlin.

Maple can be bright, but it can also roll off the top of notes. If that's the case with your Les Paul, a Custom 5 could be a VERY good pickup.

Re: Custom 5 in 68 Les Paul RI Custom?

The Custom 5 is a cool sounding pickup until you try and play live with it and find out that it gets lost in a band mix almost every time.

Re: Custom 5 in 68 Les Paul RI Custom?

i never had any trouble cutting thru with the c5 in the bridge of my sg

30 or so shows now playing heavy rock/metal with the Custom 5 in the bridge and no complaints. I can go back on soundboard recordings or even camcorder recordings from the crowd and I can hear my guitar fine. This is probably an Amp/Gear issue if you think it gets lost in a band mix. Everyone seems to get different results.......

Re: Custom 5 in 68 Les Paul RI Custom?

You guys never had a problem...I never had good results getting it to cut...

Granted I didn't spend weeks and weeks messing with it...I was doign a lot of gigging at the time and something that didn't cut it live was pulled QUICKLY and replaced with something else!

The C5 just didn't have the midrange needed to really sound up front in a full band mix IMHO.

That's probably it right there. I agree that C5 is scooped but you can change that with your amp and the right guitar, IMO.

I use two 250K's with my C5 in a LP. That gives me mids. To get that fullness in an SG, I make it into a C8.

Re: Custom 5 in 68 Les Paul RI Custom?

Would an SH-15 Alternative 8 be a better choice?
That is what I initally was going to put in but I thought that might be a little much.

It will give you lots more mids than the C5, that's for sure.
