Custom 5 SH14

Re: Custom 5 SH14

I've had them in LP's and SG's. It's a bit bright and mid scooped for me; I prefer a fuller bridge tone with more mids, so I've used different magnets. An A8 gives it a warmer fuller tone, and an UOA5 dials down the output and treble ,and adds a lot of old school texture. If it wasn't for replacement mags, I'd be reasonably satisfied with stock C5's, but since I can improve on them for my uses, I mod them.

Re: Custom 5 SH14

The C5 was my first Duncan and I still think it is a great pickup. I initially had it in a Les Paul double cutaway model, but have also had one in an SG, Les Paul standard and a couple PRS' s. Big, tight bottom and while it is bright, it is a chimy top end....not what I would call harsh. Much is made of this pickup lacking mids, and while there is a scoop I actually found this great in the guitars I ised: the mids never got congested and I never had any trouble sitting in a mix.

Re: Custom 5 SH14

I use them in a lot of set neck mahogany guitars. It is only "scooped" if you already have no mids in your tone and need a hyped mid pickup. It isn't as "scooped" as a PAF. Assuming you use more midrange in your tone than the average metal player, it's a great pickup for that type of guitar, my favorite so far.

Re: Custom 5 SH14

I put one in a friend's Les Paul copy a few years back. It sounded good, but it was tremspaced and the poles didn't line up so I eventually swapped it with an SH-6.

Me too, along with a '59 neck. I never really thought of it as "scooped", per se. Just had it's own unique personality. Which is good.

Re: Custom 5 SH14

Of all of the standard Custom pups (Custom, C5, Custom Custom/C2), I like the C5 best. But I'm not a fan of mid-scooped (PAF type) pups like the '59. The C5 is like a '59 on steroids and still has that mid-scoop. But that can easily be corrected by changing the magnet. The UOA5 mag is a reasonable choice to soften the highs and give it a bit more warmth, but it doesn't go far enough for me. Since I like the inherent aggressive nature of the Custom wind, I capitalize on that by putting an A8 magnet in it. That mag fills in some missing mids, warms it up a bit, softens the highs but keeps them sparkly, and gives it more presence and punch. Makes it full, rich, and tight. Just the way I like a bridge bucker to sound most of the time.
