Custom and Pearly Gates in my new Mockingbird - pic

I got a Mockingbird Special on a complete impulse buy at GC today. The Rockfield pickups were really dreadful. Unfocused and nasty. I tried to have an open mind and imagine who would want that sound but I have to say they were so bad I thought it might actually be the guitar and it would have to go back. I had a white Custom and a Pearly Gates Plus lying around so I slapped them in only because they were the only two pickups I had of the same color that seemed like they might match up well. I had them in an SG for a while and switched that guitar to a GFS set (Dream 90 and Dream 180) but I thought they balanced well.

Anyway, they kick complete ass in the Mockingbird. It has a great lower mid growl and the sharp attack of both of these pickups really helps. It's not a dark sounding guitar but it definitely needed some articulation and the Custom and Pearly Gates do it. I thought I would hate the white but I actually like it now. Once again Duncans save the day!

Man, you're making me miss my Mockingbird… that thing played so fast and upper fret access was as good as any guitar I have ever picked up. Damn thing was just way too bright for my tastes, being a maple neck through and all.

This guitar is definitely not bright. It's got a nice punchy mid and I'm glad I went with the Custom and Pearly Gates to give it some articulation. I'm really enjoying it and I would recommend checking this model out if anyone is in the market for reasonably priced rock guitar and doesn't mind swapping out pickups.

Sweet. I had a USA Arch top a few years back in amber with white body and neck binding and white pickups. What you need on that is some white pickup rings! Looks sweet.

That's a sweet one. Actually, the white pickups look better than anything else in that guitar. Perfect. And the Custom/PG is the perfect set for it.
