Custom pickguard

My buddy is a big fan of Faster Pussycat and Thunderbirds so......

Take 1 piece FP vinyl, 1 Delta scroll saw and viola!

It looks smaller than the stock guard in the pic but it's not except for the bottom point is cut off. Well not cutoff but 12" vinyl doesn't stretch so it has all the right screw holes but the record's outer edge instead of the point.

Re: Custom pickguard

I'm guessing you drilled the holes first, and then cut it to its shape.

Re: Custom pickguard

No I laid the whole thing out and cut it to shape. Then I lined it up and marked then drilled the holes

Re: Custom pickguard

Wow!! I never would have thought that. I figured the holes would have cracked that close to the edge. Nice job!!

Re: Custom pickguard

I use a drill press otherwise I think you'd be right, though the vinyl has a fair amount of flex so who knows. I drilled out the holes and then used a countersink so that the screws will sit down properly.

I used some of the remaining vinyl to cut a rear cavity cover for a guitar I customized for myself.

The stuff sands pretty easily which is nice because it cuts kind of crappy. The heat of the blade melts the vinyl back together again after it passes thru. It's almost like it's scored and then you snap the piece off. Then sand to make it smooth and tapered.

Re: Custom pickguard

That is AWESOME!!! I dig thunderbirds too! I had a black EPI thunderbird pro and loved that thing. Was just learning bass and the neck felt eternal, so I sold it. But almost as cool looking as the Gibby for alot less coin.. Id like to have replaced it, but hate that they quit making them in black... I have 200 plus albums but cant imagine cutting any up...

A side note, should put the skull inside the helmet... hahaha
