Okay, after getting GAS from Jolly's White Falcon, I've got GAS especially for the Filtertrons. I'm really interested in that tone, but not all that size of the big white bird.

So, ya see, I got this Hamer Artist Korina P90 and MJ says she can wind a vintage Filtertron in a P90 size....

so, now I'm working out the details with her. How cool would that be? :)

Re: Custom Shop Order for Scott_F

Awesome. I bet it would sound sweet in that guitar. Let us know how it works out.

Why do I immediately think of a potent southern c0cktail? :D

Re: Custom Shop Order for Scott_F

Am I the only one that feels the p90 market could use some more... variety?

I mean, fender single coils can be had that mimic all sorts of tones. HBs, same thing. P90's? Single coil with some degrees of hotness or humcancelling, not much else. I bet there's a market out there for something like that.

I'm not going on a 10k-like crusade here. Just wondering like this style of pup seems to have so few variants yet it has its followers. I know its probably too small a niche but I just wonder, thats all.

Back on topic. I'd like some clips too and some pics if they're interresting :D

Re: Custom Shop Order for Scott_F

Rodney Gene once told me FilterTrons lend themselfs towards Hollowbodys- and ya really need a hollow body to get "the sound" --

I have had Filtertrons in a Tele -- In another Custom Tele -- and finally in a Hollow body Big Box jazz guitar --

All I can really say is ya need to listen to Brain Setzer and ask yourself "is That My Sound?" will I want to play in the style full time? because thats all they really do well -- they do not cross the board and get into Blues and Rock and really shine above and beyound --they ain't all that - they are what they are -- Singles and humbuckers can do a much beter job for you --

The Arguments are AC / DC -- and Neil Young -- "Is that your sound?"

Don't Let ZZ's Billy Bo fool ya MJ's turned that into a Pearly gates pups-- and the neck is a hollow dummy-

Re: Custom Shop Order for Scott_F

Setzers' stuff sounds pretty good to me. I think those Filtertrons go way beyond just rockabillly. And the Hamer has an F-hole... semi-hollow. Ought to sound pretty darn good in there.

I think Duncan has the most offerings from one company. Antiquities and then vintage, hot and custom. plus the phat cats.

Fralins and Lollars are a bit more variety, but I don't believe either of them have 4 models.

Being able to drop in a minihumbucker is cool, but there aren't that many of those out there either.

Wedging a Filtertron into a P90 hole ought to be pretty cool.

Re: Custom Shop Order for Scott_F

Scott, are your 'tron's going to look like normal humbuckers, or will they have that distinctive look like the real ones?

I had the idea a while ago to get a 335 clone, put a Phat Cat in the neck, and a CS FilterTron in a standard nickel cover in the bridge - kind of a best of both worlds semi-hollow.

Re: Custom Shop Order for Scott_F

Dimarzio also makes p90-size humbuckers in several varieties.

This pickup sounds cool. Clips will be required. :D

Re: Custom Shop Order for Scott_F

I don't have any real interest in the 10K Brobucker if you want me to be totally honest! I'm just going along with the flow. I only have one humbucker guitar and it has Antiquitiers that will never be removed.... have to go buy a gitar to put the 10k into I guess.

I think I expressed my self poorly. I know about the Duncan line. I was talking about stuff like...

For instance, there are fender style SC's out there that mimic P90's,specific years, artist, stuff like that. We have pups, that are active, with all kind of bells and wistles. Yet most companies, or should I say players, are only interresed in the normal p90, something a bit toned down, something wild or something that's just an HB in a p90 casing (for lack of a better term). The most original thing in the field is the Phat Cat and I can't wait to try it and the FilterTron idea, man, that's just too cool for words.

Note my experience is with, what I believe is a SD vintage p90, so I don't know about any others, and I must say that is enough for me. My "doubt" is, do people just leave well enough alone or is it a small niche.

A least it's one kind of pup where you don't have too many doubts about wich one to pick, try that with a single coil or HB LOL.

Not trying to steal your thread. Good night folks, see you tomorrow.

GASSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS

Re: Custom Shop Order for Scott_F

Should be cool Scott...MJ does killer work! I have some of her pickups in both my Telecaster as well as my number one Strat...wouldn't trade them for anything else!

Re: Custom Shop Order for Scott_F

sounds like a good project

I've been looking at Gretsches lately ... like a Duo Jet with Bigsby.

once you get past the LPs, strats, and teles, the Gretsch tone is pretty cool

try listening to clips of Son Volt's latest CD ... the Gretsch tone is all over it

OMG, there's a 7-string Tele bridge pup in there. What kind of twang would you get from a low B? :D

Re: Custom Shop Order for Scott_F

Scott, I'm sure Seymour will do a nice job for you.

Another option worth considering would be TV Jones. He's now making Filtertrons and his variations on them in a P90-size. Supposed to be available this month, according to the website, IIRC.

I could not disagree more. A friend of mine, back in the '80s, played what I can only describe as "shred," although it wasn't metal. It was more like Rock/Punk Shred. In terms of speed, he was right up there with Steve Morse. And he played, you guessed it, a hollow-body Gretsch. And other than being packed with foam, it was stock. It was a very sweet guitar.

So the idea that all you can play on a gretsch is rockabilly and swing a la B.S. is, IMO, BS.
