Custom vs. Screaming Demon?

hey guys,
I currently have the Duncan Custom in my epi lespaul and I like it. But what do you guys think a SD would sound like in a Lespaul and comparing it to a Custom SH-5??

Yes- the Demon's output would be less than that of a Custom. Lynch likes to shape his tone from the amp's gain control. The Demon has a similar tone to that of the original PAFs- just bumped up a tad with more growl and midrange. It all comes down to what kind of music you usually play and how much gain in your setup comes from your amp. If you've got a Bogner Ecstasy, you probably have acess to all the gain you need and then some... The Custom is one of my faves- I honestly prefer it to the Demon. In your situation with the mahogany body, I would think your overall tone would be more sweeter with a little less low-end reponse. Good luck in your quest for ULTIMATE TONE!

I think everyone is correct so far. I had both in my LP. I thought the Demon - though nice sounding - was just not as powerful as the Custom. I especially liked 7th Hell's comment about amp selection. If you're going for high gain the Demon will need a little kick with either a higher gain amp or a stompbox. That's my opinion, tho.

I use the ADA MP-1 3TM and trust me.. I have more then enough gain to use . I'll try to find a guitar somtime with that pickup and try it.

Or maybe even just purchase it later and try it on my current guitar and decide.

EDIT - I wanted to ask.. will a pickup like the SD give me more bite and clearer sound then the Custom??

yes it will, lower output pickups have better clarity. higher output ones have a more compressed tone, and lower ones have more of an airy feel and more bite.

by the looks of it, it looks like the demons eq is like this:

Bass: 6
mids: 5
treble: 8

and the custom looks like this:

bass: 7
mids: 6
treble: 8

this may contribute to the thicker sound the custom gives and the more present, crunchier sound the demon has.

Hi,

is it true the Screaming Demon was made for maple-body guitars?
I have a Jackson dinky with maple body and I've put a distortion in it. Now I'm not that satisfied with it, sounds somewhat too sterile (don't know if this is the correct description...I had a topic of replacing it by an invader but not too much reaction..).
Maybe this (SD) might be an interesting pup? I want a warmer sound but still tight enough and enough balls for rythm and a nice fluent leadsound. It should suit for metal/shred.
I play it through an Engl 530 pre-amp and I'm looking for a VHT poweramp, so no troubles for the amount of distortion. A nice clean sound from the bridge pup would be positive too, I use a cool rail in neckposition for this right now.

I don't think it's true about the Demon being only for Maple Bodied guitars. I've heard them (and have them) in many different body woods, and each has a unique tone characteristic. As far as maple bodies are concerned, it's my opinion that they have a bright/brittle sound. The Demon's EQ doesn't have much in the low end department. I'd try to counterbalance the brightness of the maple with a pup that boosted the lows, giving the guitar a more rounded and balanced tone. Which SD pup features a boosted low end with not too much output? Why the Custom of course! My personal fave! Good luck in your search...for ULTIMATE TONE!
