D Activator vs. Super Distortion

Putting a new bridge pickup in an explorer and have narrowed it down to a SD or a Dactivator. I play thrash/prog and a lot of instrumental satch type stuff. Sustain and harmonics are a must and decent cleans never hurt. I play thru different amp, peaveyss, randalls, marshalls. It will have an air norton or paf pro in the neck. Suggestions

Re: D Activator vs. Super Distortion

Liked the cleans of the Super Distortion better. It´s also definitely the more classic, warmer sounding pup. Overall more versatile I'd say.
The D-Activator is über tight, very focused, brighter and pushes the amp harder. Perfect for stuff that needs clarity, articulation and cut under high gain. Doesn't really pull off cleans and more old school rock sounds though. Very crisp and modern sounding pickup.

Both are well suited to what you're looking for I'd say. The PAF Pro is an excellent neck pickup btw.

actually this is a good idea of how the Dactivator sounds, to my ears it has a nice character when playing more old school riffs

Re: D Activator vs. Super Distortion

I tried a super 3 in it last and it was very dull on the low side and lacked the sustain I get from my crunch lab. I worry the SD is to similar to the super three

Re: D Activator vs. Super Distortion

If you really need more sustain (and pick harmonics), the D-Activator has more output and will get you there easier than the SD will.
You'll still have good cleans on your neck position anyways.

Re: D Activator vs. Super Distortion

From your description of the D Activator, it sounds like it is right up my alley.

Re: D Activator vs. Super Distortion

Why not a Duncan Distortion? I get all the harmonics and output I need from that pup.

Re: D Activator vs. Super Distortion

The d-activator is the one you want out of those two.

It is all that was said above. It sustains like nobody's business too!

Harmonics are effortless.

It also is sensitive to height and volume controls. Taking it down to 8 or so takes a bit of the agression away. Lowering it lends more touch sensitivity.

It's cleans are a little bland.

tone dude, the distortion has stronger mids, deeper bottom and a high pitched scream, while the Dactivator is more flat toned, the nearest thing to the D activator on duncan catalog would be the black winter, and even then they're very different
