D'Addario NYXL

JB_From_Hell

Jomo's Nimions
I've used D'Addario strings for a long time, but tried the NYXLs for the first time today.

After years and years of putting together different string sets to get the perfect tension, I said to hell with it and went 10s on Fenders and 11s on Gibsons. I've since decided that was too complicated and now everything gets 10-46.

The NYXLs went on the '62 Les Paul (after an overdue board oil and fret polish). Acoustically they don't sound that different, but plugged in, it sounds a bit bigger, like there's more signal hitting the amp. They also got in tune more quickly and seem to be holding pretty well, with no stretching. I'm not thrilled with the price difference, but my time is split between a mandolin, banjo, acoustic guitar, and a couple other electrics, so strings don't need changed as often as in the past.

Anybody else have an opinion?

Re: D'Addario NYXL

For me, they just didn't make economic sense. I didn't notice a huge difference over my usual XL sets, and because of fretwear, they lasted about the same amount of time. Nor did I notice any change in tuning stability.

Sticking with the XLs.

Re: D'Addario NYXL

I'm an Ernie Ball string guy but I tried the NYXL's as well. My experience is the same and Boogie Bill's.

Re: D'Addario NYXL

They ok. Not great. Better than average? But lasted a long freaking time sounding decent.

Re: D'Addario NYXL

I think the wound strings are a big improvement. They seem very tone rich. I do notice more signal hitting the amp. The plain steel are kind of slinky so I prefer the more of raw material on the XLs. So I use all XLs with NYXL for the 4th and 5th string. It makes a good balanced tone for the set. I get 10,13.5,17,28,38,52 for an even feel string to string and good bass. Each set costs me about $11, the same as a pre packaged pack. Why be cheap on strings? They're the most important thing.

I got a couple free sets with a guitar and hated the first set so much that I pulled them after a week and gave the other set away. They were dead out of the box, no life at all and felt sloppy for some reason.

Re: D'Addario NYXL

Great stability on guitar with floating trems under heavy usage. That said I would not pay that much for regular strats or LPs. I found some 5-set packages of 10's on my local Lidl super market for some 10 EUR/pack, and they worked well on 3 of my guitars. On my 25.5 floating trem guitars I still use Dadario xl 9's

Re: D'Addario NYXL

I liked them at first but eventually decided against them and went back to my pink ernies. I don't like the coating and feeling of them but i can see why some people would.

Re: D'Addario NYXL

They're not coated like elixirs. It's thier new nickel wound mixture.

Re: D'Addario NYXL

I can't fathom anyone thinking they are worse than XLs. Different, and not preferable or too expensive I get, but dead out of the pack, brewing early or problems with intonating I don't get.

Personally I prefer them to XL/Slinky, but only just so, and they don't last twice as long for the price. I may go back to XL/Slinky for the daily players and Elixir for the ones I play bimonthly or less.

Re: D'Addario NYXL

I tried 'm, didn't like 'm. no particular reason other than that for that kinda cash I'd rather have the coated Elixer's. I've got over 80 guitars and with elixers they all still feel fresh :)

I Love elixirs on my Taylor. But that's not a guitar I change strings on all that often so I don't mind paying the extra money for them.
The NYXL's didn't have amazingly superior tone as compared to the EB's I usually get and since I change strings fairly often on my electrics (especially when I'm a gigging band) I'll stick with the EB's for the price.

Re: D'Addario NYXL

I put a set on my 7-string a while back. They're ok, but for the price, I think I prefer the EB Cobalts. Or for less, the regular XLs.

Re: D'Addario NYXL

I ended up with a set of 10's and 9's in the NYXL's. I took them both off a day after putting them on. Went back to my normal D'Addario XL's.

I never said they were worse than XLs, only that the set I had weren't very good. There's no reason to believe every set will be like that, but I had a gig and I wanted something that sounded and felt better to me on the guitar. I usually pick up some XLs when guitar center has them for cheap and use them on the guitars that I don't play very often. They work well enough, I'm just picky and have my preferences.

Re: D'Addario NYXL

The NYXLs get a lot of hype on other forums. I'm a XL guy so it's good to know I'm not missing out on the pricier version. I saw a set at one shop for $20. A bit too much for me.

Re: D'Addario NYXL

Got a 10-46 set in it's packaging, I'm still contemplating where to drop it.

I think I'll drop them in my 339 and let you guys know.

Re: D'Addario NYXL

I love em. But i am special, any way. i use to change only the wound strings on my guitars, because i like the darker and broken in feeling and sound of the plain strings. This feeling i have with the NYXL from the first moment.
