Damn I like the 59nA4

Re: Damn I like the 59nA4

Yeah, well, as far as I know I'm the only one to make an A8 Invader, a Custom with a big ceramic, a Brobucker with a big ceramic, a 490R/Screamin' Demon hybrid, and the first to do an A8 Detonator. SO if any of that becomes a fad I want credit!

Once I get my Kelly together I'll be trying an A4 Bro as a neck pickup.

Just saying that there are "alot" of us that have been posting tonal reviews and have done a ton of magnet swaps....Way back to 04 or maybe even prior to this forum? I was on the forums before this one also...Maybe 02/03?

I sent you a bunch of big ceramics, so I want at least a footnote somewhere. If it wasn't for me, you wouldn't have been sticking ceramics in strange holes. AA would call me an 'enabler.'

Funny.....I use the ceramics on my refrigerator to hold other stuff up... ;o) I'm just not a ceramic guy...Like you are a non-strat guy! ;o)

Re: Damn I like the 59nA4

Big ceramics are not quite the same as the standard size, I don't like the small ceramics in much of anything, stiff, thin, harsh and too loud for as thin and harsh as they are. Big ceramics are meaty, warm, and stupid loud, but since they're not so bright the loud is more tolerable, they can be a little stiff in some winds, they work best with overwinds in my experience.

Back to the topic, if an A4 59 is cool, A4 Bro just has to be better, amirite?

I'm not familiar with the big ceramics....I Like the Brobucker stock with it's Dunaged A5...Never messed with it or the A4? Brobucker and Seths are the only pickups and magnets I've never messed with..Both are right as is.. ;o)

Me too. My ceramic inventory is on the fridge, waiting for Izzo's next request. I can't give him all of them or I won't be able to keep my take-out menus and pizza coupons up.

Re: Damn I like the 59nA4

I had a set of A4 Fralin PAF's ten years ago, and remember loving the neck, but not liking the sterile and bright sounding bridge. I wish I knew then what I know now. I could have put a different mag in the bridge and had a nice set.

Then I experimented with A4's again around 2005, and realized I don't like that magnet for bridge pickups. It sounds too hi fi or something.....not bouncy and organic like A5 and A2.

And that's why A4 sounds good in the 59n. It makes it cleaner, flatter EQ, and a harder feel under the fingers. After hearing a Custom 4, I'd never use it again in a bridge pickup.

I don't have much experience with Alnico 3 humbuckers, but since SD is using it in the Bonamassa PAF's, I'm curious about it now.

Re: Damn I like the 59nA4

I was very surprised to see Dr. Barlo talking about A3 mags back in 2005.

Wasn't John Wymore the one that sold mags to everybody back then?

A real trip to memory lane... to some of you, of course! ;)

John Wymore was a great, great guy. He redefined customer service in my book. It was too bad to see him go. I like the fact that he had a special place in his heart for the forum, as evidenced by the forum member discount.

+1. I've used a few A3's in neck PU's, when an A2 is too warm and an A5 is too boomy, but it might also be nice in the bridge slot. It has some mids and might cure that scooped A5 sound.

Re: Damn I like the 59nA4

It's been said before, but Gibson used quite a lot of A4's in the late 50's in the "golden" era, according to available shipment receipts from that time. Somewhere upwards of 60% of the magnets around 1959 were A4, so quite a lot of the most sought-after PAF (and P-90) tones came from those magnets. They are indeed very even-EQ'ed when combined with the classic PAF winding formula. Perfect for transparency, allowing the guitar's natural timbre to shine through, as opposed to the spiky mids of A2 or the relatively spikey lows and treble of the stronger A5 magnets. I'm under this wild assumption that '59 Les Pauls were pretty decent. ;)

Tonerider pickups makes a Alnico 4 Classic set, which might make a really good replacement set for less expensive Les Paul type guitars like Agiles and Epis. Their tone samples on the website are very impressive. Definitely that classic PAF tone we all love. Interesting that Duncan hasn't delved into that magnet at all... aside from special CS requests.

Try a A4 AntN with a RCUOA5 AntB - and you made your own Boutique PAF set.

+1. Fralin uses A4's in his PAF's and P-90's; swears it's THE PAF sound. Most of us are accustomed to a magnet with a big EQ bump somewhere in the spectrum, which is why some players find A4's 'bland.' So far I use A4's in the bridge, but not the neck.

Re: Damn I like the 59nA4

The A4 didn't work for me in the 59n of my SG. I REALLY like the stock 59n in that guitar.

Re: Damn I like the 59nA4

Yep you're new to the game as I remember these guys way before you joined. All the mag swaps and even the Hybrids were before your time. You've been here a while now, but comparatively, you're still a newbie to the ones that have been here years before. Haha. Thanks for playing.
