Damn I like the 59nA4

Re: Damn I like the 59nA4

I had a set of A4 Fralin PAF's ten years ago, and remember loving the neck, but not liking the sterile and bright sounding bridge. I wish I knew then what I know now. I could have put a different mag in the bridge and had a nice set.

Then I experimented with A4's again around 2005, and realized I don't like that magnet for bridge pickups. It sounds too hi fi or something.....not bouncy and organic like A5 and A2.

And that's why A4 sounds good in the 59n. It makes it cleaner, flatter EQ, and a harder feel under the fingers. After hearing a Custom 4, I'd never use it again in a bridge pickup.

I don't have much experience with Alnico 3 humbuckers, but since SD is using it in the Bonamassa PAF's, I'm curious about it now.
Well said. The A4s that I have had in the Lindy PAF (before the Pure PAFs which are A2s) always had a stiff quality to them. The EQ is one thing, but that harder feel under the fingers is a great way to describe them and I noticed the exact same quality. It always felt like a struggle even in the guitars that the their inherent brightness and clarity were just what was needed. As a matter of fact, I would play better on pickups that I did not even like as much just due to the feel.

These might be candidates for an UOA5 switch (not that I know anything about that) :)
