Damon Johnson of Brother Cane's 79 LPC tone

I'm a huge fan of guitarist/singer/songwriter Damon Johnson. Back in the late 80s and early 90s he fronted a great and very underrated in my opinion rock band called Brother Cane. Their first cd was self-titled and has some great hard southern rock on it....Got no shame, Hard act to follow are a couple. He used a 1979 wine red Les Paul Custom to record the album and I am trying to figure out if the guitar still had the original T-Top pickups in it. His lead tones are downright raunchy on that cd. I'm pretty sure he was playing thru a JCM800 at the time. I know he prefers lower output PAF style these days but I'm not sure what was so magical in that Custom. Anyone familiar with the cd have a guess? Might even be a Jazz/JB?

Thanks!!!
Michael

Great Album !! Also one of my fav tones too! Not sure what he used unfortunately. But I would say something with a decent amount of mids. That said a JB in my Les Paul and PRS is a good start.

Man, still love his work. Current stuff is really good still, and awesome vocals. Send a message to his FB or official page, I'd bet someone gets back to you. So many internet rumors, but I've read more than one place the self titled album was SLO in the studio? Ask that too while you're at it haha! Great band, still in regular driving rotation for me.

Thanks for the replies guys. Don't really want to bother him plus he's on the road right now. I think he started playing the SLO after the first album. They were local to Bham so I got to see a lot of shows even before Brother Cane got formed. I'm almost 90% sure the Custom still had the T-Tops in it.

Wow... every time I mention that band and album, people are like... ummmm... who? (same can be said when I say something about Ugly Kid Joe too).. That man had a great tone! IDK what he was actually using, but it was awesome!

I always thought Brother Cane's song, "And Fools Shine On," was their best. A bit boring to play, but awesome to listen to. It's a totally different sound to it. I still have my CD.

I love Brother Cane and his tone is perfect for that style of blues rock. I remember interviewing him on the phone prior to a show around here and tried not to ask too many gear geek questions. I ended up back at their hotel bar drinking on the rep's tab with the band. That was almost 20 years ago and it was my second or third date with my wife. Good times. I have no idea how I got home let alone what he was using that night.

More than likely he was using the stock pups. I think a set of 59s would get you there.
